I've had a similar problem.
Whenever I exited from X to go back to the console, I would get a blank screen. (My monitor would go to power save).
This started happening after the nvidia drivers for my graphic card were installed. The nv driver did not have this problem.
The solution to this was to add
vga=XXX
to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
XXX is the resolution you want in your console and can be found in the following table:
Resolution
Colordepth | 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
256 (8bit)| 769 771 773 775
32000 (15bit)| 784 787 790 793
65000 (16bit)| 785 788 791 794
16.7 Mill.(24bit)| 786 789 792 795
Hope this helps.

Thanks MadEye,
I just added vga=773 after the kernel line, reboot and it just works...
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=773
So happy now...
Thanks...
