ATI Prop. Drivers - config problem:

Hey all,

First off, I'm a new Arch user, coming off a basic Gentoo install - like the forums here - everyone seems very helpful!

Pleased with how setting up Arch is going - basic desktop install.  I'm having problems though with the ATI drivers.  I'm trying to get the proprietary driverrs working, and having problems running the aticonfig program.  Here's the problem:

You should just be able to change Driver "vga" to Driver "fglrx". I've never needed aticonfig for anything.

I've been having the same problem as well. Even after changing the driver to "fglrx", once X is restarted only a black screen is shown. I tried a modprobe on fglrx, but it gave me an operation not permitted error.

Did you try to modprobe as root?  Did you remove the 'radeon' and 'drm' modules first?  (rmmod radeon drm)

Don't think I'm there yet.  I uncommented the DRI section and loaded in in my xorg.conf, as well as loaded the glx module.  glxgears appears to run great for about a second, then looks choppy - although it says I get  around 2800 frames over 5 seconds - in the little screen it defaults to when opening.  Making it fullscreen, only 43 or so, but looks like one frame every 5.  I don't see direct rendering working either:

Thanks for the help so far - I've never got 3d accel. working with my linux installs, so this is new to me.

I have nothing but radeon cards, and I have a 9800pro in particular. All i ever do is :

# pacman -S fglrx hwd
# hwd -xa

(CAUTION: This will overwrite any existing xorg.conf, omit the "a" if you just want it to generate an xorg.conf)

Change driver to "fglrx" in xorg.conf
Then:

# modprobe fglrx

I know you have done these things, although i did not notice you using hwd. Just thought I'd share. It's usually relatively simple to do, and in my experience a reboot helps.

Tried hwd -xa, here's the xorg.conf it generated.  Didn't work - went to black, blank screen when it went to KDM at startup.  Thoughts?  Did I do something wrong changing the driver?  I modprobe'd fglrx, I get no output - normal?

No output from modprobe is normal.  If you wanna verify everything's cool, run lsmod | grep fglrx to see if the module's loaded.

looks like you edited the file fine - try removing the modelines in the monitor section; I recall hearing about some problems with the proprietary driver and modelines and I don't know if they were ever fixed.

Followed the most recent advice from both aveightor and Cerebral (thanks guys - appreciate the help):

Changed default depth, added extensions section and disabled "Composite", and removed the modelines -

Still get the black screen though - can't alt-ctrl-backspace to close X either, have to hit the reset button.

Try "X -configure". If I'm right this is different of xorgconfig. Also why not taking some lines from a working xorg.conf like mine! wink I have arch64 and an ati 9800 pro 128M, using fglrx. In my case though, acceleration still doesn't work, but I get a working X and it doesn't have anything to do with my xorg.conf.. I'm actually working on that part, should be resolved soon (module problem).. There's no specification of the memory size in my xorg.conf, but you could add that, this is always good.

I'm seeing that your module path is not defined. This is important. in arch it should be         ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
