2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

Hi Arch community,

Arch Linux Don't Panic 2007.08.1 ISO release
in order to provide you with the latest and greatest arch stuff.
It is a little update to our latest ISO, which fixes mainly the
ntfs partition bootup bug which was experienced by some users.

Changelog to last Don't Panic installation ISO:
- kernel 2.6.22.6 usage
- renamed all hooks to use "_" instead of "-"
-> fixed disablehooks= boot parameter
- #7868 disabled kernel ntfs driver during arch_addons
- added 'nfsd' to installation environment
- added 'top' to installation environment
- fixed depends in install environment

Setup changes:
- #7830 Bad Grammar in Installer

EDIT:
This ISOs include a small, but nasty bug, which may lead to a non functional initramdisk if you use all defaults suggested by setup.

2 workarounds:
First workaround before entering setup:
mount -t ramfs none /dev
/etc/start_udev
now setup works as it should!
Second workaround:
while using setup:
edit /etc/mkinitcpio to not include autodetect in HOOKS= array

1 workaround if you already installed and system doesn't boot:
use the kernel26-fallback.img as initrd in your bootloader
after successfull boot just fix the ramdisk:
mkinitcpio -p kernel26

I apologize for any non functional default initramdisk by using this ISO.
greetings
tpowa

I've found it on one of the US mirrors linked from the "Get Arch" tab above.  Just have a look around and you'll find it.

BTW, downloaded and installed 2007.08.1 earlier today - ZERO problems smile
But then I didn't have problems with the previous version of Don't Panic ISO...

Just a question: Are you also german-speaking or why "danke!"? Is this word also already adapted to the american-english? (I was also very confused as I newly read "Gesundheit" in an english garfield-strip"...)

yeah, and just the other way round. In a few years or decades all (former) english-speaking countries will speak a perfect german and the (former) german-speaking countries will speak only english (but which english? american or british english?)... wink

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

just one thing that comes to mind while downloading the torrent. i think it would be best to include the md5sum text file in each torrent in the future cause ppl who choose that way to download need to later visit a mirror to get it if they actually want to check the integrity of the iso

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

u need to create new torrents from a directory rather than a single file. if u have the iso and to md5sum file in a dir together, i use mktorrent from aur to create torrent files. havent ever used bittorrent tbh but should be easy if it supports that

 mktorrent -bs 256 -a announce url -o foo.torrent path/to/directory

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

I don't think it's neccessary because bittorrent already uses hashing algorithms and clients do check integrity. I remember some time ago there was a kernel bug that caused some percent of all downloaded torrent chunks to be defect that rtorrent noticed this and simply downloaded these chunks again. It still was quite a pain in the ass because download size increased by like 10% or so...

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

Doesn't seem to work with LUKs encryption.... upon first boot displays root device not found.

kinit: Cannot open root device dm-0(254,0)
kinit: init not found!
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

how did you configure initcpio?
was it done by hwdetect?
did you say to use encryption?
what did your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf look like?
thanks

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

Archlinux 2007.08.1 Don't Panic of c-all installed by default (FS for / and the /home - ext3) in Vmware Workstation 6.0, all package, no additional settings are not made by default.
The first restart after install, and the "...kernel panic-not syncing: Attempted to kill init! "
Boot with the fallback, unchanged mkinitcpio.conf (use default conf file) comply "mkinitcpio g / boot/kernel26.img" - and then loading all normal ...
Bad kernel26.img way in iso ???
P.S. Installed with Archlinux-i686-2007.08.1-Don't-Panic.base.iso , md5 correct amount.

Thanks, good luck !

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

well if you don'T adjust mkinitcpio and rejected any option its normal that it fails.
fallback includes everything.
also i just dislike using emulators for debugging issues, because sometimes the emulator itself cause the problem

Emulators can cause problems, agrees.
OK, now try to put the physical machine Archlinux.

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

FTP installation is still borked for me. still get the exact same behaviour as the 2007.08 iso.
reading the bugs fixed for the 2007.08 one i think it was one of those to blame as some of them are related to ftp installation. most likely this: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7445.
my bug report was http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7809 btw

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

Sorry I forgot my account password while I was at home. But yea, error upon first boot like idrozd stated.

AFAIK the hooks are correct (don't have work laptop with me)... I reinstalled Arch using 2007.8 and works.

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

Why are installing double kernel26.img going to default? Try to explain:
- first, when a kernel itself.
- the second time, when kernel-fallback preconfiguration.

After this problem loading default ( "...kernel panic-not syncing: Attempted to kill init! ").
And if, after reboot system in fallback again run
>mkinitcpio -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/kernel26.img
(without corrections /etc/mkinitcpio.conf !) , it is going to normal /boot/kernel26.img  !!

IMHO, the problem somewhere in the assembly kernel26.img second time in the installer-wonder what
mkinitcpio.conf way it is going. ;-(
Even the size of these images is different-preserved - collected installation kernel26.img, after re compared with the new.

P.S. VMWare seems is not being.

Re: 2007.08.1 Don't Panic Isos released, installation feedback

"mkinitcpio -p kernel26" make different images (/boot/kernel26.img) - in installation system (~1390kB) and after reboot (1550kb) ...
Why?!
