This post is related to an older issue (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=34891) concerning the propietary NVIDIA driver combined with Geforce7300LE video cards.
All NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100... drivers cause a total freeze of the computer with this hardware. Before I could solve the problem just by using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9755. But this driver doesn't compile anymore for Kernel 2.6.23!
For continuing work I tried the opensource NV driver from the extra repository, but it failed
The only working solution was the xorg server plus NV driver from the testing repository. This solution is absolutely fine beside the missing 3D ability.
After so many NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100 driver versions the only conclusion is that this model isn't supported anymore.
As ATI announced full open source support my next video card may not be NVIDIA anymore.
Other computer with different NVIDIA card were OK after the update with the propietary driver and kernel 2.6.23.

New Kernel 2.6.23 API is not compatible anymore with some "old" Nvidia drivers.
For some reasons I have to use Nvidia 100.14.11 driver instead of the one in extra. This version is not compatible also with Kernel 2.6.23
If you want to know more about this issue have a look to this thread :

If you want a solution for driver 100.14.11 here is a patch to apply :
http://www.linuxinsight.com/nvidia-linu … .6.23.html
You might find in those 2 posts a solution for your problem (mainly apply a patch to Nvidia's drivers).
I hope it helped !

Thanks to France firt of all!
The patch may work, but the problem will emerge again. I will just replace the card for the sake of a stable system.

I understand your feelings, and I feel like you : I have just bought a new Nvidia 7300 GS card and I am very disappointed to see that there are some bugs in the latest Nvidia drivers which make it work badly.
For sure next time I will buy an ATI card !

the new (compatible) nvidia drivers are made compatible now [100.14.19-*]

For those having problems with nvidia 100.14.19 and their card, in particular 7300 GS people, I have made stable (for those cards) and compatible with kernel 2.6.23 packages (using a patch) package using 100.14.09 version which is the last known to work correctly with 7300 GS chips from Nvidia.
See my post here :

Thanks God (?) i'm not alone. I also bought this card and had the same problem. Gonna try to start x with --ignoreABI and see what's happen.
Im using nvidia drivers from repo (nvidia 100.14.19-6), xorg stable (xorg-server 1.4.0.90-5) and kernel 2.6.23.
My experience was the same, works fine with NV, but no 3D also affects the performance. Disabling APIC from BIOS kind to works for me, it still freezing, but 95% of the times it only freezes for about 5 second and then works again...
Anyway, gonna try ignoreABI...or buy a new card.

Hi !
I personaly have switched back to the NV driver, waiting for the Nouveau driver to be stable enought.
But the new nvidia driver 169.09-2 actually in "testing" should fix the problem for people like us having a 7300 GPU.
You should give it a try !
Asta luego !

Hi, thanks for a quick answer.
First of all, the "StandardXServer=/usr/bin/Xorg --ignoreABI" line doesn't work...my screen locks for 4 seconds while trying to post this reply :-P. I don't use nv driver 'cause, for example, when i select a lot of icons, the gnome effect for that runs at 4 FPS...better not talk about switching desktops, and don't even think if firefox is in one of them...
I'm gonna enable testing repos and try the 169.09-2 driver, anyway, seems to be a better idea to change this card for a 8000 series.
Bye.
