Unable to mount USB2 HD

Hi,

Bought me a HP Pocket Media Drive 120GB to transfer some documents from one location to another. When I hoop it up to my debian testing pc at work, everything is automatically mounted ok, but when I get home (Arch current / gnome), the drive won't mount.

# fdisk -l
This command only lists the partitions on my fixed HD (/dev/sda)

# dmesg
This teaches me that "usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64 error -110"

On the ubuntuforums I have found some people with the same problem, and it should be related to the USB-port. Sometimes
# modprobe -r ehci_hcd
works automagically, but in my case it doesn't. Others have had succes by upgrading their BIOS, but I haven't gotten around to do that. I will try it out tonight, but only if nothing else comes up as a possible cause.

THX!
Zl.

/EDIT: As I've skimmed the forum and wiki, I should add that:
1. I am member of the hal, dbus, optical, storage groups (I am not sure whether hal is a member of storage - something I have yet to check)
2. hal, dbus and fam are running and restarting them doesn't change anything
3. gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager are installed correctly and gvm is started in my sessions-panel
4. In my BIOS i've enabled the options to use an USB mouse and keyboard - I had 'em disabled at first, but no luck
5. I used several USB ports (front and back)

/EDIT2:
Debian Dmesg's me upon connecting the HP PMD:
usb 3-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 3-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...

Where Archlinux Dmesg's output is:
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 1
usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64 error -110

Re: Unable to mount USB2 HD

This is probably kernel-related, so followup @ http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38859
