Kopete crashes X with compiz-fusion?

X seems to crash when initiate an IM conversation box from the contact list, and only when I'm using compiz-fusion as the WM.
I've done a search and found bug reports and threads related to nvidia/composite, but they were all quite very old and I couldn't seem to find a solution to it or know if those were solved/closed, anyone know a solution to this or am I better off switching to pidgin?
Couldn't find anything but these on my xorg.log.old

I am getting the exact same problem. I typically use emesene but I just switched to KDEmod and I hate using GTK under KDE.. Kopete is great but these crashes are ridiculous. I am also running nvidia, and I also get the same error in Xorg.log.old.

any updates on this?  I'm getting the same crash and it's quite frustrating, if not is there an alternative KDE app that i can use to get onto aim?

It happens not only with Compiz fusion, but with any compositing manager (I tried with xcompmgr and kompmgr too). This bug happens for me only when I have a new popup notification.

Solution for now? Stay off composite stuff. Despite the hype, it's pretty beta stuff, and not only Kopete, but a lot of things don't work well with it. If it was okay, we would have KDE 3.5's Kwin native support to composite already.

for me it happened first with arch. no problem with sabayon (which i used before arch).
here it happens with kopete and konversation but not every time. i think it is 1 of 4 konversation-starts. i use konversation more often than kopete.

just tried it 3 minutes ago -> crash -> restart -> tried it again -> kopete works.

I'm having the exact same problem after updating to latest kde and nvidia drivers.
Anyone has found a solution to it yet or you guys switched to an alternative IMs?

I just switch back to pidgin, yea it has something to do with compositing manager as freakcode mentioned, it also crashes with gwenview too I think, but I can't remember for sure, I found that kde's website stated there might be problems using composite with some k programs since it's new, so I just stopped using those programs altogether, since those two were the only ones I had crashes with, and their alternatives worked as good.

I just switched back to 100.14.23 nvidia driver, as some users pointed out that this problem exists only with newer drivers:

So far everything works.
I'd rather get rid of composite altogether than stop using my favorite applications

using openbox and xcompmgr for 2 weeks now. only one crash with konversation but i didn't start kopete or konversation very often.
