I just bought a new dvd-burner. At the first boot I noticed a lot of messages along the lines of:
ata2 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
and an extremely long boot time. 3 to 5 minutes. When finally booting in to system the drive seems very sluggish to mount. Should I disable sata and pata in mkinitcpio? Is my new hardware crap?
Its a Samsung Writemaster DVD-burner btw.

I don't think so. I'll post some more info when I'm at home.

Please post dmesg and look at DMA data.

Well, the drive was hanging a windows installation as well. Actually it seems that neither OS like this drive very much. I think I'm going to get it returned, way to much hassle for a dvd-burner.
Offline
Could this problem have something to do with that my computer is a Dell 8300 dimension?

ok, I got the drive to work in windows, had to move jumper to cable select. I still have the long boot, here's the dmesg:

A quick google and this is what I've found:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … me-591276/
Apparently the solution is to boot with "pci=nomsi"... Maybe it'll help.
Offline
That didn't work. Thanks for tip anyway.
Offline
Hmmm...I had hopes for the NOMSI parameter, also.
I had virtually identical error messages with an IDE HD (120GB WD Cavier) a couple of months or so ago (and I was getting kernel panics; dead in the water). No Windows here, but it happened with both Arch i686 and x86_64. The reason for my comment above is that fwojciec's link eventually leads to a page where the problem was on an Asus mobo, as am I (and a similar model).
In MY desperation, I started to question the IDE controller. I have a spare Silicon Image Medley 0680 (PCI IDE controller), so I plugged it in, and connected the drive to it. Worked like a charm. I reinstalled Arch x86_64 with RAID1.
FWIW, the drive went into 'click of death' mode about 2-3 weeks later (thankfully I was running Software RAID1), which of course is not relevant here. But I'm following this thread - I'd like to get RAID back!

Perhaps some sort of interrupt (IRQ) issue?

The problem you report seems related to the following post which shows similar loss of dma in dmesg.
The post is : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=42512
This seems to be derived from the ata, libata module......
A solution was reported...

Thanks lilsirecho...
So let me get this straight. I remove sata and pata from the hooks, and insert ide.
I don't have an ali chipset, so which modules should I use?
Then I change my menu.lst and fstab entries from sd* to hd*.
Then I do a mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
and then reboot

Rerun 'lspci -v' as root; you'll get behind all those "access denied"s.
Well, I see a lot that looks odd. I'm comparing mine to yours, but I'm using a VIA chipset-based mobo and an AMD CPU, so we're far from apples to apples here.
What are all those "Dell Unknown Device"s? I only had 2 (relevant) "Unknown devices": my (inbuilt) ethernet, and a PCI sound card.
I don't know your motherboard (or chipset), but an IRQ conflict (which I thought didn't happen anymore) could possibly be a problem. Shared IRQ's is one thing, but the only IRQ's I see used are 16-21 inclusive, and buy my count at least 3 devices are assigned to 16, and to 19 (I'm NO expert on shared IRQs; they befuddle me). The first three my system assigns are 0, 2, and 9. What are your Plug-and-Play settings in BIOS? Are some IRQs reserved? (like 0-12, or something)? I see no IRQs below 12 mentioned.
Interesting that you're getting error -16's. I have a still-non-functional sound card that gives me that every bootup.
See what your BIOS Plug-and-Play and IRQ assignment method is, and re-run the lspci -v from root and see if anything interesting shows up.
What brand is the DVD? I find it weird that it worked in Windows strapped for cable select.
Lastly, do you have another system (NOT a Dell) you could put it in to see if it works there?
You may have a good point about just returning it.
Offline
I have no further info except to suggest that the Intel IDE chip should probably be correct.
I find problems in my IDE interface due to libata but cannot fix them with my system since it is a "Live" install via IDE and cannot be modified AFAICT.
I have no further recommends.

The cable select thing is dell specific - I couldn't derive any explanation from the dell forum threads. Believe me I would never have bought a dell, somebody threw out this one I have (my guess is that it was because the cd-rom wouldn't open) - so I thought that I might as well put it to good use. It's actually pretty snappy compared to what I'm used to. (OT: Another annoyance about the hardware in this dell, is that there are NO sensors!! So, no cpu temp etc. wtf!)
You're right about the 3 devices assigned to 16.. a bit freaky... hmm..
I'll try out the ide solution.
This is my only system right now.

Done and thanks for pointing it out!
The modules I added for my specific system was ide_disk and piix.

Nicely done! I also noted on the internet that some firmware in DVD devices is not compatible with normal recent kernel Linux boots.

for those with issues, it would help me more to get a hwdetect --show-modules to actually see which module is broken

tpowa, I'll post a hwdetect --show-modules (with the problematic setup of course) here monday or should I post it elsewhere?
