alsa upgrade?

Hello

I've just ordered a new soundcard(Asus Xonar D2/PM), and I've read that are some troubles with this card with alsa 1.0.15, and the driver has been rewritten in 10.0.16rc1(rc2 has been released). So I wondered if alsa here on arch is going to be upgraded before 1.0.16 release?

Re: alsa upgrade?

Hello!

I think you could grab alsa-lib pkgbuild and build 1.0.16 pretty easilly with it wink

Re: alsa upgrade?

The reason why I haven't done that yet is because I'm afraid there will appear distribution specific bugs, which I don't know how to solve.

Re: alsa upgrade?

Well, if everything with the new package goes down the tubes, rolling back to the one in the repos is fairly straight-forward.

Re: alsa upgrade?

Uhmm.. the drivers are in the kernel, not in alsa-libs. Which driver is it specifically?

We generally don't put rc releases of anything into core/extra, unless there's a very good reason.

1.0.15 fixed a huge bug if I am not mistaken.

Re: alsa upgrade?

There is still a lot of troubles, in 1.0.16, the driver is rewritten.

Re: alsa upgrade?

Probably, a strange question to aks, but I'll try anyway
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/ … .patch.bz2
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/ … .patch.bz2
Here are the patches to current arch kernel 2.6.24. Do I get it right that these patches change the alsa modules version in kernel? How can one get these patches, or is it an archlinux's devteam workaround? I mean, can one find those patches for alsa 1.0.16 before archlinux's devteam considers including ones?

Re: alsa upgrade?

Well I hope the devs upgrade alsa as soon as possible so I can enjoy my new soundcard when I receive it:)

Unpack the kernel, take a copy of it, apply the alsa patches, then do a diff against the original.

Re: alsa upgrade?

I have a Razer Barracuda which runs on the same chip. I have not tried 1.0.15 but 1.0.16 works well.

Install the driver, lib, and utils from the alsa website and it should work out wink

Here's a quick install guide:

Re: alsa upgrade?

The 2.6.24 kernel series has alsa 1.0.15 builtin. We usually like to keep our packages as vanilla as possible, so there's unlikely to be a new kernel release just to update the alsa drivers.

That said, if you can find a patch that applies cleanly to update alsa and open a feature request on the bug tracker, it may be possible to release the next maintenance release of the kernel with the newer alsa drivers. It might be worth asking, anyway.

Re: alsa upgrade?

Everybody is not willing to patch his kernel. So it would be greatly appreciated if one could profit from alsa 1.0.16 through a pkgbuild or a kernel in unstable.

I didn't say everyone had to patch their kernel. But I did say if you want any chance at all of the kernel maintainer seeing that you want alsa updated in the kernel, you'd better open a flyspray ticket. Did you open one?

Or better yet, you could share a PKGBUILD and help others out.

Re: alsa upgrade?

Okay I managed to create a pkgbuild for alsa-drivers, but to create an pkgbuild for an kernel compiled without alsa-driver, was over my level of knowledge, or create a pkgbuild for the kernel with alsa-driver 1.0.16 patches, could somebody be so kind to modify the current kernel pkgbuild to build without any alsa support so I can use an external alsa-driver package?

I have the sound card now and I really wanna use it.
