kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

The last upgrade made xorg/nvidia to crash after every logout from KDEmod
with same output. No errors/warnings in upgrade. Reinstalling nvidia or rebooting wont help and help is needed, thanks.

pacman.log:

Edit: A quick test with e-cvs from community (entranced+e17/kdemod) did not crash after logout. It looks like kdm of the kdemod with nvidia-96xx is the reason.

Some advise howto debug this type of an error is welcome.

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

Any ideas? Do you think this is nvidia problem or just kdm problem?

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

**edit: fixed, just installed the nvidia driver using the official nvida driver download. Maybe this issue will be resolved in the next nvidia package.**

Hi Purch,

I also have the same problem you describe here. Using the latest nvidia-96xx driver when I try to end my kdemod session, kdm crashes instead of reloading. I use the inittab method of loading kdm. The problem is avoidable by just killing the X server with Control-Alt-Backspace rather than logging out correctly, but of course this is not a true solution.

Have you tried reverting to the previous version of the nvidia-96xx driver (.04 I think)? I'd like to try this, but I haven't been able to find a pre-built package for the older version.

Please let me know if you come across any solutions for this issue? Haven't seen anything develop from the post on kdemod forums either...

-Greg

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

I used xdm and now I build the last working nvidia-96xx-96.43.01-8 drivers. Both work.

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

I upgraded last night and am getting this problem also. nvidia 96.43.05-1 with kdemod, although the same happened with other wm's. I get exactly the same errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old.

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

I experienced the same problem with the Arch nvidia 96.43.05-1 packages, ie a crash when I choose 'End Current  Session' in KDE (not KDEmod), it doesn't return to the kdm login screen and the only thing that still works is the 'Ctrl-Alt-Backspace' key combination which causes a reboot.
I observe the same thing as rollenwiese, ie after the removal  of nvidia-96xx-96.43.05-1 and nvidia-96xx-utils-96.43.05-1, I installed the nvidia driver with the installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run, downloaded from the Nvidia site, and the problem disappeared.
So definitely there must be something wrong with the Arch nvidia 96.43.05-1 packages.

I posted a bug report : http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9818

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

I experienced again today the same x server crash on logout, with the installation produced by the Nvidia installer.
So the Arch packages are not responsible for that bug, and the cause of it for me is left unknown, maybe a nvidia driver bug.

Edit : So I reinstalled the Arch packages nvidia-96xx and nvidia-96xx-utils 96.43.05-1

Re: kdm/nvidia-96xx crash on logout after upgrade

It seems that a workaround to that bug is to edit the /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file like that :

[X-:*-Core]
...
TerminateServer=true

The line in bold characters is added.
The option TerminateServer is false by default. With the true value, the X server is terminated and restarted on logout session, instead of only been reset.
For me, this hides the X server crash because it is restarted, and kdm is also restarted.
This workaround avoids the black screen on logout and the necessity to reboot.

Thanks for this workaround. I been struggling with this issue too using nvidia-96xx.
