[renamed] Holy Crap Firefox3b3 is fast! [b4 even faster]

I'm running Firefox 3 beta 3 and it seems that having browser.urlbar.richResults set to false doesn't work anymore. I'm hoping that someone here knows of a way to disable it. It's really, really painfully obnoxious.

Never mind. It looks as if it may be left to the land of extensions: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407836

So I changed the title of this thread...

Holy Crap this browser is fast. It is truly the fastest thing I've ever seen!

I'm currently using swiftfox, but I can't wait for 3.0. big_smile
Good to hear it's fast!

Re: [renamed] Holy Crap Firefox3b3 is fast! [b4 even faster]

I'm the opposite; with every upgrade Firefox seems to become slower and bigger.
Compared to Firefox Opera 9.5b with its default settings is *a lot* faster for me.
Despite Opera's lack of plugins I'm still using it as my daily browser although I'm
sometimes still forced to start Firefox because of problems (Yes, I'm looking at you Google Reader).

Now if there was a small, fast browser with plugin support (like Firefox/*bird/Phoenix was a long, long
time ago) I would jump on it immediately. Alas...

Re: [renamed] Holy Crap Firefox3b3 is fast! [b4 even faster]

Firefox 3 is smaller and faster than anything in modern Mozilla history. When I first built beta 2 I was blown away by how fast it was. It seemed much quicker to me than Opera. Beta 3 is even more so. But, what I haven't done is start these browsers side by side with the cache empty to see how well they scale and how they compare after a week or so of my daily operations. Sadly 64 bit Opera isn't ready for me to use normally so I can't get a fair comparison.

Hmm ... my memory of Phoenix and Firebird is that they were dog slow on the hardware that was available when they first came out (they should have printed books on the splash-screens so you could eat a sandwich and catch up on reading while either was loading).

The pace of hardware advances has far outpaced any FireFox "bloat", so for me, the FireFox lineage has only gotten better, not worse.

I'm sorry but you're certifiably insane. Firefox 3 is absolutely faster at rendering than Firefox 2 and the latest beta is indeed even faster than previous betas.

Re: [renamed] Holy Crap Firefox3b3 is fast! [b4 even faster]

I can only confirm that. The new beta blew me away after the performance-fiasko that was FF2. I don't even see a reason *for me* to use Opera anymore now (although it is still a great browser). FF3 is a milestone and it's finally what I always wanted it to be.

Hmmm it seems faster to me, but scrolling stutters a lot.
As for memory, after a fresh start I'm running about 30MB behind what I normally stabilize at (120ish normal, 94 current)

Besides the extra flash (gtk theme), I'm kinda unimpressed. The places bar is annoying.

Thanks for the personal insult. Nice, friendly community indeed...

Did you consider the fact that hardware, build settings, etc. are different from the environment you have there?
I said it's slower for *me*.  I also was primarly comparing it to opera and not only 2/b3 and for me Opera is certainly faster in almost everything.

Epiphany with the WebKit backend may be what you're looking for. Personally I did not try it yet, but everyone in Gnome land seems to be talking about how nice, light and fast WebKit is already. And Epiphany is obviously the best browser around at the moment (even with the xulrunner backend) smile

I suggest you compile your own with systemcairo from AUR if you want decent fonts. I don't understand why mozilla can't load cairo dynamically. If it's found on the system, load it. If not, use your own. GAH!

I think we're talking about the same thing here. The fact that it's not only the default, but the only out of the box choice now is really bad design. I wish I had a better choice, but at the moment Firefox is it.

Agreed. Cairo 1.5.8 is really nice on the eyes.

Is 3 going to be ready, in extra soon (oops: I mean network)? 2 has gotten really bad after the recent updates, for me at least. It's never been this bad.

At the rate that Mozilla is going, I wouldn't say "soon". I agree that the firefox3-systemcairo build in AUR with upgrading Cairo to what ever is newest is the way to go. Just a warning though: there are still pages that do not render in Firefox3, as well as it's sensitive as hell to problems with GTK themes.

Re: [renamed] Holy Crap Firefox3b3 is fast! [b4 even faster]

Do you know any alternative browser usings the new rendering engine? I'm currently using Opera, which comes closest to my needs, after hiding the menu bar and controlling almost everything with keyboard shortcuts (i.e. Ctrl+T, Ctrl+Shift+Z, Ctrl+W,...)
The only features I really use a lot are autocompletion (if possible only) for some selected (bookmarked) sites and disabling of flash and maybe javascript, other than that I just want to be let alone by the browser, waste as little screen estate as possible and it should be fast and lightweight.

I didn't like vimperator, are there any alternatives? Opera is OK, but it's (apart from the intel firmware) the last piece of proprietary software on my system, so I would be happy to be able to replace it.

There's Conkeror (with Emacs-like keybindings), it's a standalone browser now. Which I have just ditched to come back to this new version of Firefox. I never thought it could get as fast as Conkeror.

I'll be honest...At first, i'd agree completely with this, but if you use Firefox 3 for like a week, you start to learn how it works, it starts being able to pull frequency data out of your history and it starts to be awesome.

I haven't had any problems with the places bar, TBH - I like it.

Based on this article.. http://ventnorsblog.blogspot.com/2008/02/beta-3.html memory usage should improve. Seems that FF3 will used the memory allocator from FreeBSD called jemalloc. So we'll see what happens when beta4 hits and this is implemented..

I've heard jemalloc rumors...2 of them specifically...

1. Firefox will no longer use above 150MB of RAM unless you're under certain circumstances (shitty-coded extension, HUGE SVG file, etc).

2. Firefox will use 50% less RAM in almost every situation.

I installed based on this thread. I really was very pleased with Firefox 2 and if I had to uninstall Firefox2 in favor of Firefox3 then I would've just waited for the final release.

But I'm glad I installed it. It is fast. I've only been playing with it for little while though.

Is Holy Crap the codename for the new Firefox, by the way? tongue
