Installed was vlc 0.8.6g-1 and now it will force a downgrade. Is this correct?

yes it's correct. From svn log: "was contacted by developer who said the new release is bad". The new release refered to is 0.8.6g,

I confirm I had problems with the 0.8.6g version. VLC segfaulted often without any warning and when doing normal operations. I had to downgrade quickly too.
