She was bored, I was playing Sauerbraten, so I gave her an Arch install CD and told her to go to town. She started not even knowing how to use nano, and in an hour she had xfce up and running and spent the afternoon themeing it yesterday. She needed some help figuring out the config files in /etc during the install and didn't know what hardware she had (this is on my old notebook with a spare hard drive), and other than that, all the help she got was a pacman briefing and what the names of packages and Unix commands were. Most importantly how to use man.
Just thought I'd make the announcement that Arch has passed the Girlfriend Test.

Don't think I would be able to imagine what would happen if I gave my GF an Arch linux CD and told her to install it herself. The outcome would definitely not be her having a "fresh" Arch install.

Let me guess, she'd laugh at you and tell you that NetBSD is -The- way and that Linux is for newbies who hate windows and don't know any better?
josomebody: What exactly is the girlfriend test and what exactly is it supposed to prove?

Maybe add a protection like the age verification system in Leisure Suit Larry.
With some questions about Arch (e.g. present some problems where the user must pick the most KISS solution) and general knowledge questions about Linux.

just mix some code from the Gentoo installer..

Well ... a solution, to avoid having to obfuscate the installer's code, would be to include a "female detection" procedure in the installer. If the installer determines the user to be a female it will fail to install even if all the commands issued are correct ...
