I been using KDE 4.1 for some couple weeks and everything was fine since yesterday when as I usual do, I upgraded the system. That seems the main reason because now kdm still working, I selected KDE session to start kde but then nothing else happens! My screen is full of some squares black & white lines pixels. No taskbar, no icons... no desktop at all.
My first reaction was ok, let's just delete all the old config .kde and .kde4 and start a fresh KDE but no luck . Then I decided to reinstall pacman -S kde and delete again all the config, reboot... nothing. Here is the list of packets since this problem appears:
[2008-08-06 19:46] synchronizing package lists
[2008-08-06 19:46] starting full system upgrade
[2008-08-06 19:50] upgraded archlinux-themes-kdm (1.1-2 -> 1.2-1)
[2008-08-06 19:50] upgraded kdebase-workspace (4.1.0-4 -> 4.1.0-5)
[2008-08-06 19:50] upgraded pciutils (2.2.8-3 -> 3.0.0-2)
[2008-08-06 19:50] upgraded phonon (4.2.0-1 -> 4.2.0-2)
[2008-08-06 19:50] upgraded qtcurve-kde4 (0.59.6-2 -> 0.59.6-3)
thanks

I had something similar and since there have been more upgrades that have restored the usability to my system.
It *seems* to be slightly more responsive as well.

diesel1 thanks for reply back. What do you suggest? That is not normal! Has to be a bug somewhere or something.. don't you think so? I was very happy with my KDE 4.1 but since then I don't know, better wait until a more stable release.

Same problem here... I couldn't find a solution yet.
I need to be productive so I've switched to gnome for now...
I'll wait for some updates.

At the moment and for a temporal solution I have switched to kdemod 4.1 and works fine. But I'm having some problems with firefox, it crashes without any reason.

Same problem here. (08/08/2008)
Did a pacman -Syu. After the updates, I rebooted.
I don't use KDM - just type startx at the command line.
KDE appears to start with appearing icons showing progress but
then ends with the KDE Crash Handler.
A Fatal Error Occurred.
" The application Plasma Workspace (plasma) crashed and caused the signal 11
(SIGSEVG)
I then end up with a blank screen with mouse cursor. The screen is not frozen - can move mouse.
I do CTRL+ALT+Backspace to get back to the CLI.
List of packages updated:
pacman (3.1.4-1 -> 3.2.0-1) libXKlavier (3.5-1 -> 3.6-1)
libassuan (1.0.4-2 -> 1.0.5-1) kdebase-workspace (4.1.0-4 -> 4.1.0-5)

Reference my previous post.
I just tried the pacman -Syu on a laptop I use for some testing.
I get the exact same problem. After the upgrade, KDE no longer works.
I tried switching from the nvidia driver to the nv driver. No luck. KDE still crashes.

Got KDE working! Don't know if this is correct fix.
After some googling, I saw on an Ubuntu forum someone having similar problems with
KDE4 crashes. It was suggested he delete ~/.kde4 and restart. The directory will be
recreated upon your next startup.
I tried that and I can now use $ startx to start KDE without the crashes. Of course, I lost
all my Desktop optimizations but I can recreate them easily.
Caution! I am a bit of an Archlinux noobie so I am in no position to recommend this unless
you are just testing KDE4.

That did not work in my case. Still getting error related to knotify. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52876

I had the same problem, then upgraded the nvidia driver and it worked, Unfortunately all the desktop effects in kde 4.1 don't work after installing this new driver.
I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Confirmed here as well. I updated to the new kernel and nvidia driver .. and it was complete fail. KDEmod 4.1 got all the way to the K in the splash screen then hard locked every time.
I had to switch to archlinuxfr/nvidia-driver ... effectively downgrading to the previous nVidia driver. Works fine now... but I'm still not a very happy camper.
