[Solved] Dell 1525 : Sound's decreasing when headphones are plugged

Hello Archers !

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and I've got a sound issue since the kernel 2.6.26 upgrade.

The sound works fine with the laptop speakers, but when I plug my headphones or my 2.1 speakers the sound is decreasing until there's nothing whe can hear ! The decrease lasts less than 10 seconds. I use alsa, gnome and my sound module is snd_hda_intel.

When I unplug the headphones the sound doesn't come back. Alsamixer says that the level is on top but I can't hear anything.

The only way to make it work is to restart the computer. Restarting the alsa daemon doesn't work.

I think that it might come from the new kernel since it used to work before. It also works with Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24 kernel).

Do you have any idea for a solution ?

Thanks

Up !

Is there someone who has already encountered this issue or a similar one ? Dell Inspiron users ? Kernel 2.6.26 users ?

I've cleaned my package cache so I can't downgrade to 2.6.25 kernel. I think I'll get this one on the 2008.06 install cd of Arch if I have no solution.

Re: [Solved] Dell 1525 : Sound's decreasing when headphones are plugged

I also have an Inspiron 1525 and now you mention it, I also suffer this problem. (I've installed kernel 2.6.26 recently so I didn't have the time to notice it). Very strange and annoying.

kernel26 2.6.26.2-1
Alsa(libs and util) 1.0.16
Card: HDA Intel
Chip: SigmaTel STAC9228

Unplugging the headphones doesn't bring the volume UP. (Alsa volumes are all at 100% as shown by alsamixer)

I've also noticed that in alsamixer and KMix appeared 2 new controls/mixers named "Headphone" and "Headphone as Line-Out" (may be the HDAIntel driver (or this codec) was reformed in 2.6.26 and the changes introduced this bug/problem)

UPDATE:

This also happens when using the second headphone jack.

If you boot when the headphones connected (in the 1st or 2nd jack), there's no sound at all after boot. (I suppose volume is lowered when the kernel is loaded)

----

From http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … 16_v1.0.17 :

- hda: Add 5.1 support for second headphone jack
Several 92hd7xxx and STAC9228 laptops have multiple headphone jacks,
the second headphone jack should be used for the 5.1 surround sound.
Add support for 'Headphone as Line Out' switch, which allows it be used
    in 5.1 surround sound.

On several laptops that have STAC9228 codecs have unused DACs,
this powers them down to a D3 state.

But we are using alsa 1.0.16:

$cat /proc/asound/version:
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.16.

or may be a 1.0.16+ alsa

Re: [Solved] Dell 1525 : Sound's decreasing when headphones are plugged

Downgrading to the 2.6.25 kernel resolved the issue. It clearly comes from the new kernel. Does it come from the Arch build  or from the 2.6.26 kernel itself ? Can we report a bug to the kernel developpers ?

Thanks

Re: [Solved] Dell 1525 : Sound's decreasing when headphones are plugged

Seems like arch patches (ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/ … 1-ARCH.bz2) which includes the "2.6.26 -> 2.6.26.2 patch" modifies some hdaintel source files (http://pastebin.com/m13721b13) , but I think this isn't an Arch patch and I don't know if it's directly related to this issue.

More info:

When you connect the headphones to the jack, dmesg adds:

hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x20171704

There's a bug report in the kernel bugtracker with the same dmesg output, but not the same symptoms : http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11300 . May be it isn't related at all.
There's another related bugreport : http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10954

UPDATE:

Seems like the "hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout" dmesg message is unrelated to this problem: I've rebooted and without connecting the headphones, that message already was in dmesg output.

It can be fixed in a simple way. Just add to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack

and reboot the laptop. Everything will be fine.

uname == latest pf-kernel

Re: [Solved] Dell 1525 : Sound's decreasing when headphones are plugged

I've added the line to /etc/modprobe.d/sound (didnt have the alsa-base file), and it works fine with the new kernel ! Thanks !
