SYMPTOM
I installed KDE4 a week ago via Pacman. There are no problems booting. I get to KDM, choose KDE4 as my session, and login. The splash screen starts and shows the hard drive icon, the screwdriver & wrench icon, the world icon, and then stops.
If I type CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to restart the X server, I can get back to KDM. If I choose Openbox as my session, I can start Openbox without any problems.
The same thing - hard drive icon, screwdriver & wrench, world, hang - happens if I select KDE4 (failsafe).
Has this happened to anyone else?
SOLUTION
grave's post pointed me in the right direction. (Thank you!) In the terminal, I typed
sudo chmod a+rw .ICEauthority
in my home directory. I rebooted and KDE4 loaded perfectly.

The first time you start a new KDE4 system it takes quite a while for it to build all of it's configuration folders. Are you sure you waited long enough for the build process to complete?

Thanks for the quick response. I forgot to mention that I installed KDE4 a week ago and until this morning, I had no problems. I will edit my original post to include this information.

I've had this problem, sparodically. All I do now is issue the 'chown <user_name> /home/<user_name>/.ICEauthority'
and all is good again.
Wonder what causes it ?

I was also having this problem... kept having to kill X and change the permissions (chmod a+rwx) but I keep having the same problem everytime I boot up. Is there a permenant fix?
