that may be an explanation:

bummer.
is there any other patch(set) that could compete with zen's and zenmm's performance and features?
edit: actually, I'd like to know which kernel was running on that server... and if that has anything to do with the fried mobo

If it's of any help, I can tar up and send the 2.6.28-rc4-zen1 sources to whomever wants them.

how about tar.gz-ing it and putting it on Rapidshare?
rather than sending the sources to anyone interested... I figure there should be more than one person (namely Me) interested in it, so you could be better off just posting the link here...

How are you liking it so far?
I've been using zen for ages and now I'm using reiser4 and ext4, so .28-zen is a must for me ;-) Works nicely.
I'll upload it to rapidshare soon.

I'd be much obliged. And I believe I speak on behalf of many users.

Yeah, try vanilla.

Some like chocolate more.
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

Tried. Been using it for some time. Yeah, fast and stable.
A bit too mainstream and too boring for my tastes - just a personal preference. Yes, I consider using "bleeding-edge" and patched stuff to be fun.
I was hoping you'd recommend me the default Arch patchset, though

He did...

Actually, the Arch patchset is different from vanilla, AFAIK.

Oh. What's the difference?

Actually, zen includes few nice patches that make boot zen kernel faster than vanilla. There are other nice tricks that you can do with zen not available with vanilla.
Not everything is so rosy though. For example, while suspend to RAM works well with vanilla, I always had problems with zen.
This is always some sort of trade off.
Nice thing is that you can have on the same system Arch kernel, vanilla kernel and zen kernel. If you have nvidia card, then install nvidia module on each kernel and then you can boot and use each kernel without delay.
with ATI this may not be possible. I don't know if ATI allow to install simultaneously modules on all installed kernels.

I said AFAIK. If you find this to be wrong, please correct me.
I haven't looked at the patches that come with the Arch kernel, but I know they exist (checked the PKGBUILD), and I'm guessing there's no point in patches if they make no difference.
Haven't looked at the patches, I admit. Didn't see the need to do so, bcos I believe that if I want a kernel with the Arch patchset, I'd just install the stock kernel.
with ATI this may not be possible. I don't know if ATI allow to install simultaneously modules on all installed kernels.
No problem with ATI here... running the zen, rt and Arch kernel here, all have ATI module loaded.
