Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

I think a copy of the pacman.static binary conveniently located on a short and memorable URL would be very useful. Once I hosed an Arch Linux install but managed to recover it by repeatedly wget-ting directory listings of ftp://ftp.archlinux.org (if I remember correctly) and reading the output until I got to the package which pacman.static was in. Also, it might be useful for people who want to install Arch Linux onto a device from another Linux distribution.

So I suggest that we put pacman.static at the root of the web site. If people generally think it's a good idea, I'll post a request on the bug tracker (if that's how things are done here).

Re: Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

There is no official pacman.static anymore (given it was not all that static anyway) and I don't think anyone has cared enough to make one of their own...

Re: Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

The installer media is a full-blown livecd nowadays too, which I've used to fix a lot of hosed systems with various OS's on them.

The suggestion box only accepts patches.

Re: Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

If pacman.static is gone, what's the recommended way to install Arch from a different distro's livecd? (e.g. you need some obscure wireless driver that's found on the Ubuntu ISO)

Edit: I found <http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ting_Linux>, which says to grab pacman.static from another location.

You can find pacman-static in aur and as a binary in the [archlinuxfr] repo.

It's not that hard to find...

Ah...okay.

I was thinking of the use case where someone has a computer with an internet connection but no web browser and pacman (which happened to me once) and needed an implementation of pacman. But yeah, the Live CD or USB would do fine in that case.

Re: Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

This sucks. Today I am trying to install arch from gentoo. I can not get pacman.static. The url  http://repo.archlinux.fr/i686/pacman-st … pkg.tar.gz  is down. And I can not compile from source because there is no -lfetch or -ldownload (no idea which package supplies this) available.

The packages you need are libarchive and libdownload.  They are here: http://archlinux.unixheads.org/core/os/i686/

Re: Suggestion: http://archlinux.org/pacman.static

This sucks. Today I am trying to install arch from gentoo. I can not get pacman.static.

i've got the ebuilds for it. interested? (they're fairly simple) they do not build static pacman, but all dependencies are met (obviously, since they build pacman from-source) and you can bootstrap arch from gentoo with little effort.

i also managed to bootstrap arch from current slitaz "cooking" livecd/liveusb. ( http://slitaz.org/en/about/ )

you need to download these manually off arbitrary archlinux package mirror and untar them into the running system

pacman
libdownload
libarchive
acl
attr

and then pacman starts working. just untar them with " tar xvzf file.tar.gz -C / " - it's just a livecd environment so it can get a bit messy. slitaz is pretty neat for install media for advanced users, due to its small size (default iso is 25mb,and can easily be extended with extra software and rebuilt ).
