why are we still using grub legacy?

i've just bought a 8 gb arch linux usb key from dusty and installed arch linux on it which went very fine.. booting on pc's are working like a charm but it doesn't boot on osx.. and during my researches i came across grub2 at its own site and grub-legacy is something deprecated.. how come we use something "old" in arch?

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

grub(1.9x) is still in an alpha state. it lacks some essential feature (afaik booting from lvm and dmraid setups). grub-legacy is well tested and just works.

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

I was bored, so I grabbed grub2 from svn and built it. Now booting from ext4 /boot partition cool

Pretty simple upgrade. Some really nice new features in grub2, will have to explore them.

Forgot to mention, it makes life with software raid so easy, grub was a pain, now you can just use grub-install and it just works. Also I did have to modify some source to get it to compile and the grub-install script as it is not correctly updated with the --prefix from compile time.

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

I tried it yesterday, too, was confused by /usr/etc/grub.d-scripts and /etc/defaults/grub, not working scripts for automatic menu creation, and finally created /boot/grub/grub.cfg manually. Havent found any hint how to tune the gfx. Found it was not worth the efford, and switched back to grub...

-> the package in the aur is somehow wired. It installs the config scripts in /usr/etc/grub.d, but they don't do their job. If they should not be used, then they should not be installed. If they should be used, they should do.

-> documentation is ... ah ... where? Is there any?

Here is the documentation, that is avaiable for grub http://grub.enbug.org/FrontPage?action= … StartSeite  at the moment. There is not that much documentation upstream.

If someone tries, the configuration file has changed to /boot/grub/grub.cfg and the syntax also changed a bit (especially note the change in device names).
Ah well, just follow the instructions in the install file/wiki and you should be fine I suppose.

and add things to the wiki if you have usefull things to add, it is by no means complete yet, I just made a start so you guys can get your feet wet wink

With a bit of tweaking I got it up pretty quickly. I wish I had my colors back, though sad. *digs around for a solution*

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

Well, there is a background_image option in the grub command line, but I would have to set a video mode for that...

Accursed grub devs not having any real documentation yet.

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

Building our own documentations is a price we have to pay when using pre-release software I suppose.

For the colors, in /boot/grub/grub.cfg somewhere before your menu entries, you can specify something like

set color_normal=cyan/blue
set color_highlight=white/blue

but please use other colors, these are really ugly tongue

Here is a little something about colors for the grub2 menu. I haven't even got it set up yet, so i don't know if it works, but i found it in the "CommandList" and i think it should work for the config file...

EDIT: whoops i read it wrong... color is now replaced by menu_color_highlight and menu_color_normal

Xorg 7.4 + Grub 2 + kernel 2.6.28-rc7 + pulseaudio + ext4 (if your system is still able to boot this...)

While we are talking about fancy stuff, when will ext4 be mature enough?

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

sudo modprobe ext4dev

I haven't tried it personally...

http://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto
"As of this writing (mid-July, 2008, just after the release of 2.6.26), the ext4 code is functionally complete and functional enough that a few people are using it in production. However, it is still being tested and although the developers haven't lost any data yet, please be cautious and keep plenty of backups! "

grub2 is now in extra, give that a spin. And why not just use ext2 for boot?

Re: why are we still using grub legacy?

Does the grub2 package in extra support graphical backgrounds or does it need a patch like with the old grub package (grub-gfx)?
