Xorg won't start.

Since I installed the latest Xorg, it won't start. It complains about incorrectly configured screens.

Oddly enough, I can't find anything in /var/log/Xorg.*.log.

Re: Xorg won't start.

I had a similar problem. Xorg.0.log said there was a problem with this line:

RgbPath         "/usr/share/X11/rgb"

right before saying some stuff about incorrectly screens.

I just removed it and everything seems to be working fine.

Re: Xorg won't start.

I should have mentioned, I currently have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, I removed it to avoid problems like that.

Re: Xorg won't start.

Same issue here in /etc/X11/XF86Config generated by nvidia-xconfig with

RgbPath         "/usr/share/X11/rgb"

Just commented out and was able to start X.
Maybe something should be added to the announcement.

After removing that line, I can`t write any special language chars. I`m from Poland and we have a extended Latin. It`s quite annoying. How to solve it?

Re: Xorg won't start.

I removed the line but xmonad isn't even able to tile windows anymore. Yet key bindings for dmenu, epiphany and what have you all work. I might have to switch to another WM in the meantime it seems.

edit: Actually, it seems that xmonad is just not tiling urxvt anymore, every other app tiles fine. My trackpad also doesn't work now. Is there any command to go back to the old X packages? hmm
edit2: So seemingly, it was something in my .Xdefaults that made urxvt misbehave. Now I just need to get my trackpad back.
edit3: Arrow keys are dead. Yay.

Try setting your keyboard under System-->Keyboard-->Layout. I just added my language there (Danish) and then everything worked again.

Re: Xorg won't start.

Okay, here's what I did to get my Xorg working exactly the same as it was before the update:
- Comment out RgbPath         "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
- Add Option "AutoAddDevices" "False" to ServerFlags (see this wiki article)

Everything runs just as well as it did on my old config once I do this. Hopefully it can help others.

Re: Xorg won't start.

Hey OP, I'll try to help, but you need to post some more info.

What video card do you have?
Which drivers are you using? The proprietary ATi catalyst?  Or the OSS ati drivers?
Can you post your old xorg.conf? I hope you didn't delete it without saving a backup!
Do you have more than one monitor? If so, what's your screen layout?
What are the exact error messages that you get when you try running `startx` as root? Make sure to be at init level 3 when you boot, starting at 5 can screw things up while you're trying to debug the problem.

I had a bit of trouble after the upgrade.  Here's some things I noted while trying to debug:

Running `X -configure` caused segfaults. No idea what was up there.
Removing the RGB line people have been talking about from my old xorg.conf allowed me to start into twm with `startx`, but it didn't recognize my two monitors.
I removed the /etc/ati/amdpcsdb file and ran `aticonfig --desktop-setup=horizontal --screen-layout=right`. This let me boot up into twm with both monitors recognized & working.  Then booting up into XFCE as usual worked fine.

Give us some more information and perhaps play around with aticonfig to see if you can fix your problem.

I'm also having issues with the compositor.  Alt-tabbing, resizing windows, recalling minimized windows, all are incredibly slow.  I do have desktop icon labels though smile Disabling the compositor is an acceptable workaround for me (all I was using it for was the fancy shadows).  Kind of a shame, but I won't miss it much.

Edit: Resizing Terminal windows is still incredibly slow.

I was using the proprietary drivers, but with this version of X even the vesa drivers won't work.

I deleted it. It was just generated by running X -configure, aticonfig, and a few small tweaks. Nothing strange or unusual.

Do you have more than one monitor? If so, what's your screen layout?

I just have one monitor, it's a laptop.

I removed the RgbPath line, and now the entire system locks up and I have to do a hard reboot.

I had this happen once during troubleshooting.  I wish I could remember exactly what I did to fix it...

What did you remove the RGB line from?
Does `X -configure` generate an xorg.conf file in /root?  Is this the xorg.conf you're trying to use now?  Can you post it for us?

no speed issues here, using nvidia-96xx (it has been updated at the same time as xorg).

Currently I'm using my old xorg.conf (I recreated it), as I keep switching between the current and previous versions of X (current to try to fix, previous to actually use my laptop). The xorg.conf I'm using is:

Re: Xorg won't start.

I see that you are using kbd and mouse drivers. For new xserver you need to use evdev driver for input devices or disable AutoAddDevices option. Read this article especially this part.

EDIT: sorry, if you already checked this.

Re: Xorg won't start.

OK, adding

Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

Works for me. Boy that was damned frustrating! When I first did the upgrade, I not only lost my keyboard settings, I lost all my font settings and X refused to work. I eventually got around it by blowing away the old configuration file and starting again from scratch. However, this time nvidia-xconfig refused to work and I had to use

sudo Xorg -configure

instead to create a new config file. After some tweaking, getting rid of multiple monitor settings etc., and rerunning nvidia-settings, i've managed to get it working.

No, you're not alone.  I cannot get X to start with the nvidia driver.  It will start with the nv driver, with or without an xorg.conf, but the keyboard mapping is shot despite me following the wiki stuff about hal policies and also setting the keyboard layout under gnome's System -> Preferences (amusingly, it takes a screenshot every time I press the up arrow key!)

As far as the nvidia driver goes, I get:

NVIDIA: Could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).

despite /dev/nvidia0 being all correct and present, followed by

(EE) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA kernel module does not appear to be receiving
(EE) NVIDIA(0): interrupts generated by the NVIDIA graphics device
(EE) NVIDIA(0): PCI:2:0:0. Please see Chapter 8: Common Problems in the
(EE) NVIDIA(0): README for additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

despite booting with either pci=noacpi or acpi=off.

The card sections could probably be commented out as well, but I left them in for safety. It seems that Xorg thinks I have two monitors, since it, initially at least, can't see my PCI bridge. However running startx & then running nvidia-settings as root & merging the config files sorted that problem.

Re: Xorg won't start.

@Barrucadu:

How did you recreate the Xorg.conf?

Xorg -configure

has always had good results for me.
I assume that you are not doing this, as there are modes specified in your xorg.conf
