Hi Arch community,
Arch Linux (archboot creation tool) 2008.12-1, "Nepal" has been released.
http://downloads.archlinux.de/iso/archboot/2008.12/
(Thanks Pierre for hosting them in the meanwhile )
This is a test run for the created files, please try to find showstoppers.
If everything is alright, those files can be moved to the mirrors and torrents can be created.
To avoid confusion, this is not an official arch linux release!
It's an installation environment created with the archboot tools.
Please report all bugs only to my email address.
Thanks for testing.
Have Fun
greetings
tpowa

Installed your new release (USB image) last night on a test machine with the arch64 option and it went very well. My only issue was a PEBKAC one to do with the madwifi drivers and it being 1am when I decided to try an install.
Thanks for your installation image, it works very well.

Thanks tpowa, tried it out on a standard x86-64 install, no problems.
Somewhere, just out of sight, the Penguins are gathering!

Thanks, tpowa! I've tested it under VirtualBox - there weren't any problems.

does this iso support dmraid install? 2008.06 & 2008.10 cant do it.
with WIKI way, after installed, raid bios said that raid is broken after reboot.
ps. hpt37x raid set, and fedora 10 just doing well.
Offline
It includes the dmraid package, i can't tell ya if it works, because i don't have such hardware to test.
What was broken on 2008.10?

What was broken on 2008.10?
it can install with wiki page, but when reboot raid bios show array broken.
can you do it like fedora did, install all the way without wiki way?
Offline
I don't know the correctness of the wiki in such a case search for a generic dmraid instruction.
If you find the error in our dmraid package, please make a bug report and post the fix for it.
I can't test it.

Booting from usb gives me "Extlinux , boot error" on my Portégé M800-10C ;'(

Hrm was it a clean usb stick?
no other bootloader or something installed?
md5sum was ok?
already had positive usb stick install reports.

Tobias, you may have read on arch-general that I've been working on a totally refactored installer (installation framework).
It's called AIF. Basically I've taken the old /arch/setup from installer.git and totally refactored everything to make the codebase clean, modular and reusable. Lately I've also been rewriting the whole blockdevice/filesystem part of the installer because it wasn't very good. For more info I refer to http://dieter.plaetinck.be/AIF_the_bran … _Framework , http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-gen … 02541.html (albeit most of the info there is a bit outdated now) and http://github.com/Dieterbe/aif/tree/master
I also maintain packages in aur ( http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21565 follows the master branch, where I pull in all the stabilized code, so I recommend this package)
Right now AIF is mostly good for developers/power users who wish to make custom installation procedures.
Towards the reglar user there isn't that much of a difference: the installer looks very similar. although under the hood 95% of the things are different. Right now I'm also working on supporting lvm/dm_crypt.
Anyway, if you're interested, I suggest you take a look at the code and if you like it you could maybe integrate AIF as an alternative, experimental installer. (it doesn't conflict with the other installer, it installs alongside)

sure, i know of your rewrite but didn't have time to look at it closer.
All mirrors are now synced with the images.
Get them from your favourite mirror iso/archboot directory.
Unfortunately, 2 small issues are included:
- memtest is broken due to compilation bug
- dmraid seems not to work, downgraded package will be on next images
Both will be fixed when .28 kernel image arrives.

sound great, can't wait.

when .28 kernel image arrives.
Will we have an ext4 option in the installer?

haven't thought of this but shouldn't be an issue, is this stable in .28?

tpowa, no chance about a smaller install cd? I know it's a very handy tool but I really miss the good n' ol' 30 gb ftp cd...
anyway it's a great pre-relase! thanks a lot!
They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.

I believe you mean 30 mb...

For the record those ISOs have nothing to do with the official cds, it's a demonstration of the archboot scripts.
If you want a smaller image use archboot on your favorite pc and generate one:
pacman -S archboot
mkisolinux -c=/etc/archboot/presets/isolinux-ftp -g=test.iso
mksyslinux -c=/etc/archboot/presets/syslinux-ftp -i=test.img

thanks tpowa, I'll try that...
@Gullible Jones: Yeah, soory for the typo. What I wanted to mean was: 'a 30TB cd'
