USB 3 Modem will connect but I cannot browse

The title says it all really.

I am using wvdial and that seems to setup everything nicely, but I open firefox and it cannot connect to anything. Usually I use wireless but sometimes the connection is so slow its useless. Thus the 3 USB Modem is needed. Normally I use my friends Eee PC, but I can't keep using a 7" screen for web browsing; prefer the 15" on my laptop (This proving it is not the DNS Servers, which apparently are so slow there like my wireless connection. Compared to what I'm getting, its lightening).

Thanks in advance.

Re: USB 3 Modem will connect but I cannot browse

To help things along I thought I would give you my wvdial.conf and the list commands I do and the output.

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Stupid Mode = 1
Modem Type = Analog Modem
ISDN = 0
; Phone =
; Username =
; Password =
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Dial Command = ATDT
Baud = 9600

[Dialer three]
Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","three.co.uk"
Stupid Mode = 1
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Username = guest
Password = password
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes

Then I type, 'sudo wvdial three' so it can access /dev/ttyUSB0.
The output is:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
OK
--> Sending: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","three.co.uk"
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
CONNECT
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Thu Jan  8 07:51:18 2009
--> Pid of pppd: 16778
--> Using interface ppp0
--> local  IP address **.**.**.***
--> remote IP address **.**.**.**
--> primary   DNS address ***.**.***.**
--> secondary DNS address ***.**.***.**
Caught signal 2: Attempting to exit gracefully...
--> Terminating on signal 15
--> Connect time 0.8 minutes.
--> Disconnecting at Thu Jan  8 07:52:08 2009

So it connects, but I just cannot browse. Does anyone know why?

Check your routing table when you're connected.

Re: USB 3 Modem will connect but I cannot browse

Just to make sure: Are you copying the /etc/ppp/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf once you are connected ? (Or any other method to put valid DNS servers in resolv.conf)

Asking, because wvdial/pppd doesn't do it automatically, unless you edit /etc/ppp/ip-up.

Re: USB 3 Modem will connect but I cannot browse

Thank you, thank you, thank you, it works. Also thank you very much for point out the ip-up and ip-down shells. No wiki I found ever pointed them out or said anything about resolv.conf in /etc/ppp/. Thank you, thank you. I am truly grateful.

Re: USB 3 Modem will connect but I cannot browse

Don't know if this is relevant though firefox starts up in OFFLINE mode when doing the 3g modem wvdial pppd thing.

There's some mods for the firefox prefs or something I read about so that it DOES connect upon starting (firefox). What I do is just go to file and then down to 'work offline' and then it usually refeshes and connects for browsing though I've had a few things with gmail needing a backpage arrow and other twiddlings, and sometimes a restart etc needed.

there's a steady progress happening and its still way way way better than the glut of rubbish you get with windows and the drivers thing.
