Hello,
did my regular upgrade today (incl new kernel 2.6.28), and when i rebooted the computer, my mouse stopped working (the pointer is visible, but cannot be moved)... well, i can operate my system sonewhat without a mouse (as is do now), but i'd rather have my mouse back
/var/log/Xorg.0.log gives following error:
config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
in xorg.conf i have
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
(enabling AutoAddDevices didn't help)
does anybody have an idea?
greets,
pseb

If i use the usb port instead of ps2 it works well.
I use xorg with hotplugging enabled, i have no section about my mouse in xorg.conf.

Do you have xf86-input-evdev installed? Maybe check the output of 'lshal' and see what driver it is using for the mouse.

I had some strange problems with my mouse after upgrading the new 2.6.28 kernel and the new nvidia driver. Everything works fine now that the mouse is plugged in a USB port and not with a PS/2 adaptator.

I solved the problem in the same way but i would know why it doesn't work as PS/2
Wittfella obviously i have evedev installed, lshal output is long, tell me what i have to "grep" :)

Same problem here.
USB mouse works fine, but when I use my USB to PS/2 converter the mouse doesn't work at all.

maybe related:
After upgrading to 2.6.28 Xorg completely freezes from time to time while switching desktops, using compiz-fusion.
I now changed back to metacity, and cross my fingers to not see a freeze again.

The PS/2 mouse is mistaken for an Elantech touchpad which is why it doesn't work .
It seems like it is a patch on the way: http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/319/
When I plug in the mouse and reboot my computer I get:
$dmesg | grep elan
psmouse serio1: ID: 10 00 64<6>elantech.c: Elantech version query result 0x00, 0x01, 0x64.
elantech.c: assuming hardware version 1, firmware version 0.100
elantech.c: Synaptics capabilities query result 0x00, 0x02, 0x64.

Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf
options psmouse proto=imps

i had exactly the same issue as Engelbrekt but i did not know how to solve it
Engelbrekt 's solution did the trick for me.
Thanks

After today's kernel update, my USB Logitech mouse does not work at all.
lsusb doesn't recognize it, neither does xorg.
Any ideas?

1. Wait http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/595/
2. Try build kernel without CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ELANTECH=y

But, well, my mouse is connected via USB, not PS2. And it still doesn't work.
