Kernel 2.6.28 and new Nvidia driver - Black screen, no mouse, no keys

Hello,
After reinstalling my arch system and installing the new nvidia (180.22) - X doesn't start correctly.
All i get is a black screen, with nonresponsive mouse and keyboard.
I've read some posts regarding P/S2 or USB mouse issues, but this is a laptop (Toshiba Tecra S5-10X), and I dont have a mouse to attach to it.

Here is the output of Xorg.0.log, any insights?

Again, thanks.

Did you try a reboot?  I dont know if after installing you did an update, maybe a new kernel was installed?  when kernel 2.6.28 came out, after update, i re-installed nvidia 180.22, and was getting the black screen, no keyboard response.  a clean reboot fixed it.

Anyway, i did find a solution, posting it in a sec, consider this post closed.

Thanks.

Hi ajschwartz
How did you manage it ?
I think it has something to do with Xorg.conf but I cannot figure what exactly.
Can`t wait for your solution

hmmm... been a long time since i ran an nvidia card, but iirc, i had to specify a particular, nvidia-produced agp module to get it to work.  the GART bit sparked that dim memory.  i know you found a work-around, but perhaps that ancient info might help find a real solution...

hth.

maybe do as root, in terminal (close x, shut down kdm/xdm/gdm):

lsmod | grep agp
lsmod | grep nvidia
rmmod nvidia
rmmod [whatever agp came up]

reinstall nvidia driver (in my case it's:)
yaourt -Rd nvidia-beta nvidia-utils-beta
yaourt -S nvidia-beta nvidia-utils-beta (from aur)

modprobe nvidia (to reload the kernel module after nvidia reinstall)

restart X or /etc/rc.d/kdm3 restart (in my case again, whatever DM you're using)

that's usually my process when updating nvidia drivers or after a kernel update

Re: Kernel 2.6.28 and new Nvidia driver - Black screen, no mouse, no keys

Hi All !

Well, I'm trying to find a solution without having to downgrade the nvidia driver

I managed to get mouse, keyboard & screen back after replacing xorg.conf by another old one I had saved. But I still can't find out what makes the difference between the two xorg.conf files

Now, I get KDM at startup, but when I log into Kde4, it loads then crashes back to kdm.
I can load xfce, but its quite unstable & with no window decoration (can't move windows at all).
No problem with mouse. Can't get the right layout for the keyboard, though.
So my guess is that the new drivers have someting to do with xorg 1.5

I'll post some more results later if anything gets better

Could hal be messing up your keyboard layout in X?

Re: Kernel 2.6.28 and new Nvidia driver - Black screen, no mouse, no keys

pacmaniac -> yes, thanks for the tip. I think so actually, managed to get kde4 working perfectly and keyboard settings right by adding

Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

in the "ServerFlags" section xorg.conf

Right, now my Xorg 1.5 has behavior like 1.4 if I understand the wiki. Desactivating the Input hotplugging, wich is new feature or something.

The problem is I'm not sure if that is an long-term solution to it. Will I have another "no mouse / keyboard / screen" problem again after the next update ?

I don't really understand all that hotplug/hal/evdev things, even after reading the wiki.
It says that :

hwd has been updated to work with xorg-server-1.5. Currently, it disables HAL-based input device hotplugging and instead generates a traditional xorg.conf including input devices.

Well, I have both hal and hwd Daemons starting at boot in my rc.conf, so am I missing something ?

not until the x devs decide to drastically change the default input layer (again).

h
err, you don't.  hwd isn't a daemon, so i bet you $10USD it fails at boot time.

either

  a) you don't define input devices in xorg.conf and you do set AutoAddDevices to true, and xorg uses hal to take care of all input
--or--
  b) you define your input devices in xorg.conf, set AutoAddDevices to false, and x uses your definitions.  it still needs hal installed to run, though.

btw, this has been covered *all* *over* the forum.

hope that helps.

kludge -> Thanks very much. I'm sorry, I have read a few threads on the forum, but difficult to understand clearly for me what was the right thing to do, cause I'm not a dev at all, and my english is not that good either.
