Hello,
Maybe this is not an ArchLinux issue, but still maybe someone could help me. I have an Intel HDA sound card and no sound whatsoever. I've tried many things but still can't get it to work. I can't remember, but I think the sound worked with kernel 2.6.27 (I'm not 100% sure, this is a new computer).
Here's the output of aplay -l:

In modprobe.d/sound I have
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=ref
I've compiled and installed the most recent alsa-driver package, ver. 1.0.19 but with no changes.
I'll appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Przemek

I'm just going to state the obvious things that it could be, so I know there's a great chance that you've tried them:
1. Ensure that you don't have any channels used muted in the mixer
2. Make sure that the user trying to play audio is in the group audio.
Do you get any error messages when trying to play audio?

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.

I've unmuted channels and mostly I test sound as root, so there should be no problem.
Also, I don't get any error messages, mplayer seems to work just as always. aplay also doesn't show any errors.

options snd-hda-intel model=ref
try to change from "ref" to "auto" and reboot

I seem to have the same problem on amd64. I used the chakra / kdemod livecd as installer. maybe thats a hint to someone...

Maybe it's the drivers in the kernel...

using oss may solve the problem?
And are they usable with kde4 and vlc?

Please check the output of:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec
and
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 | grep Codec
Then, check http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … ostcount=1 for list of know models of HDA Intel and then try adding the appropriate option for your model
options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx
at the end of the file /etc/modprobe.conf and then restart.

id doesn't work!
I even set options snd_pcsp index=2 ...

My codecs are:
Codec: IDT 92HD71B7X
for codec#0 and
Codec: Nvidia MCP78 HDMI
for codec#2.
These are not listed. on the website. I've tried this modprobe.d/sound
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-pcsp index=2
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable-msi=1
but with no luck. Also, I've read that sometimes the headphones may work (mine dont ) -- this might be of help to other people.
I've reported this issue to the alsa-project community.

hey guys,
i found a solution for my pc.
instead of adding a line into /etc/modprobe.d/sound i created a file named /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and put the line mentioned above inside: "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack".
worked for me...

OSS is much better I hear for these chipsets.

I had the same problem because snd-pcsp would be used by default.
Adding this :
MODULES=(... !snd-pcsp ...)
in /etc/rc.conf and rebooting did solve the problem for me.

Nope, this doesn't work for me...

I had the same problem (but ALC268 for me)
I just find how to resolv it
model=toshiba did nothing.
I had to add position_fix=0 :
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba position_fix=0
I found with OpenSuse live CD. No sound at boot too, but a GUI which proposed this option. When I set to 0 sound appeared

I was having the same problem a couple days ago. I got ALSA working and then it stopped working. I know it's going to sound fustrating, but you might have to do what I did:
Go back to the wiki a do everything again, one step at a time. It took me two hours to get it working, but it finally started working again. Also avoid alsa-conf, it seemed to break something when I tried that so I did everything again manually. And remember to save the mixer settings

You need to work with the alsa developers to get your cards supported. See here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … _Intel_HDA
A little effort and your alsa troubles could be fixed permanently going forward.

OK, I've found a solution. Check that all your analog loop backs are OFF.

I found two tools that may helping a lot:
asoundconf/asoundconf-gtk
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23382
Find your card name:
asoundconf is-active
asoundconf list
it will show you some like that:
$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
NVidia
pcsp
start asoundconf-gtk and choose your card :
This will create a full functional
.asoundrc
and a
.asoundrc.asoundconf
file under your home/'user' directory..
Second one i do not know realy what you can do with it but it is a low level confoguration tool for intel_HDA soundchips:
HDA Analyzer
This tool allows change the HDA codec setting using direct hardware access
bypassing driver's mixer layer.
the Python script can be found here:
http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa.git … py;hb=HEAD
run it by:
py hda-analyzer-run.py
it will give you some cryptic tool:
If someone can tell me what this tool will do for me im happy

Well hello, I guess I should say I'm relatively new to Arch, this is my second install (don't really know what went wrong the first time ), but now I have a nice, fresh and fast system, with only the stuff I want and need. Aleluia brothers! I'm pretty happy with it Feels even more free.
I also happen to have the Intel HDA audio controller, and it functions perfectly. I just followed the wiki on the alsa section with:
pacman -Sy alsa-libs alsa-utils
pacman -S alsa-oss
...added !snd_pcsp to the Modules section in /etc/rc.conf.. I had already added my user to the audio group, all that's left is to save alsa settings.
That's all I did to get sound working. I installed through a core iso, 2009.02.
lspci output:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Maybe this is what CoolGenie was talking about (it's on the wiki):
There may be an issue with two conflicting modules loaded, namely snd_intel8x0 and snd_intel8x0m. In this case, edit rc.conf and in the MODULES array blacklist the latter one so that it reads !snd_intel8x0m afterwards.
Muting the "External Amplifier" in alsamixer or amixer may also help.
