Hi,
I want to install Arch on my laptop (Dell Vostro 1400 dual-core Intel), specifically for kdemod3.
Should I use 32 or 64 bit ?
I had Arch 64 on it last year and as I remember, it was a pain to get things like Google Earth to work.
Is there a noticeable speed difference under 64? And for what sort of apps? If I install a 64-bit version of Firefox would it be noticeably faster than a 32 bit version? (for things like javascript-intensive 'web 2.0' sites?)
The other issue is that I don't think google gears is available for 64bit yet. But mostly it is frustration from trying to get Google Earth working, IIRC that was why I re-formatted from Arch last year.
Thanks,
kilolima

I have a vostro 1310 with arch64 on it. It works like a charm, although I never tried Google Earth on it... flash works, java works (openjdk or sun jre beta). I had some problems with suspending/hibernating, but it's ok for more than 2 months now...

GoogleEarth5 works fine and is well integrated if you use kde. Actually I have a big problem with the last openjdk6 (1.4.1). Compare to 32bit I don't see any performance increase on 64bit when lunch and run programs, neither in stability (kde). A good performance is in editing video, rip video and mangement of big file compressed with ark. In any case soon or later you will full the /opt with bin32 library ... if you need close code program. Maybe for a laptop is better to wait ...

If one or 2 packages gets you to reformat rather than find a solution, perhaps Arch itself isnt a good choice.

I have both Arch32 and Arch64 on my Lenovo X200, and I can say there's really not much of a difference. The 64bit installation feels a little bit snappier for some applications (video and audio), but certain apps (e.g. Skype, Wine, Zattoo) don't work without 32bit libraries or a 32bit chroot. If you don't need any of those 32bit-only applications I'd recommend Arch64, even if it's just for future-proofing :-)

(*edited to remove rudeness* Sorry.)
thanks for the replies! I think I will try arch 32 instead.

Wintervenom,
That like a graphical wiki page. Sweet!

Klitz, that is not so helpful... if you have the time to tinker with your main computer endlessly to get common apps working... good for you (and go get a job!)
To everyone else, thanks for the replies! I think I will try arch 32 instead.

I didn't read this thread carefully before. What Kilz said wasn't intended to be rude, so this level of sarcasm isn't helpful.
