Linux Kernel 2.6.29 released!

Yay!  I've been waiting so long for this kernel to be released.

Linux now has support for Kernel Mode-setting and Btrfs (we'll so how this goes).  Also, don't forget Tuz!

Check out the article here.

Will KMS be enabled by default in Arch?

Uhm.. I think it will take a long while (one or more years) until btrfs becomes stable.

Let's hope that Arch uses the (temporary) Tuz mascot for this release...

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Linux Kernel 2.6.29 released!

Seems we don't even need to do anything for KMS to be activated and used. I just rebooted into 2.6.29 and my X startup and VT->X switching got at least two times faster. Sweet!

xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1 supports KMS or have to wait for the xserver 1.6 with the latest version of intel driver ?

You need the new X server and driver (I think).

Re: Linux Kernel 2.6.29 released!

Aww looks like no kernel mode-setting support for the ATI driver at this moment sad

Sure looks like a neat feature though.. I'm excited.  I get messed up graphics sometimes when I switch from X.Org to a VT console and have to repeat the process several times for it to go back to normal.  Sounds like KMS will fix that smile

If he (Mr. Torvalds) wants another logo for "his baby" (the kernel) we should do it. The reason for this is not money, he wants to give away a message. I think its a question of respect for Linus and his work for free software.

How long does it normally take before there's a new kernel release in the arch repositories?

Just like with all other software: when it's ready, it's ready. If you're in a real hurry, build it yourself, if you like living on the edge but are too lazy to build it yourself, install testing wink.
