xorg crashes with legacy nvidia drivers

Since I upgraded to xorg-server 1.6.1-1, latest kernel and latest nvidia-drivers, xorg doesn't start with the nvidia-driver. When I do not use an xorg.conf file, x starts using the vesa-driver with max resolution 800x600 and horrible refresh rates.

I have a pretty old card, NVidia GeForce 4MX 440, and use the legacy nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 drivers, kernel 2.6.29.1-3.

As far as I understand, I need an xorg.conf file to use the nvidia-drivers, right? I figured my previous xorg.conf file might be outdated, so I generated a new one using "X -configure". This generated the following file:

Btw, in the Module-section, it also loaded "dri" and "dri2" -- I took those out, but that didn't make any difference. When I start x with this file in place, I get the following error:

Does anyone have any idea on what's going on? Please help me out here, I have no clue on what to do or where to look, and my system is pretty much unusable now.

I really have no idea what that means, but it turns out that adding "nopat" as a kernel parameter does the trick. If anyone has any info on what this means, please let me know!

I think I had the same problem with the same update and same video card.
I found the solution in this forum.

Adding nopat to the kernel line of my grub menu.lst solved the problem:

I've had the exact same problem, the only solution for me was to not use nvidia driver anymore but xf86-video-nv AND NO xorg.conf file (otherwise X crashes each time). Hope its help wink
