Gnome's 'Users and Groups' shows nothing all of a sudden

When I look at my System>Administration>Users and Groups I have no entries.  In the past, I would see all my users listed and their group affiliations.  Any thoughts as to what's going on?  I checked my /etc/group and it looks normal.

EDIT: none of the gnome system tools work!

has not ever worked for me. (at least in the last couple of month on arch) I read somewhere else that this issue might be related to UIDs below 1000, but i just created a user and i did not show up.

I know that it was working not too long ago on my system.  I haven't turned up anything useful on google either.
