[solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

Hello,
I wonder is anybody encountered similar problem (see topic)?
my system
today installed official arch kernel 2.6.30-ARCH
so my updated system looks as follows:
system:
Arch linux i686 up to date (system update 06-23-09)
kdemod 4.2.4 (up to date) i686
nvidia video card Go 7400
nvidia driver 185.18.14
file system: xfs
RAM 2GB
kernels:
2.6.30-git1 up to -git16 (installation of nvidia driver fail on git-17 and above due to the new and no doubt exciting changes to the kernel)
or
2.6.30-zen1
or
2.6.29.5
or
2.6.30-ARCH (official crom core)

booting to any of 2.6.30 kernels will cause lost of transparency effects, window decoration effects, smooth transition from login screen to the desktop)
booting to 2.6.29.5 will restore visual effects.

Because all the kernels have nvidia module installed, and problem identical persists with different nvidia drivers i assume that this is related to the changes in the kernel.
No erors in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/errors.log
/var/log/messages.log

I did post similar information at Chakra site but problem may not be related to kdemod 4.2.4 but kde 4, so that is why I decided to post about this issue here.

Thanks

Did you try re-enabling the effects in the system settings? Any errors?

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

when I boot to 2.6.30 and try to disable first and then re-ebable desktop effects I am getting the following error:

Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

However changing compositing type from OpenGL to XRender does not fix anything.
Trimming down xorg.conf or running without xorg.conf does not help

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

Hi

Try this in a console:

KWIN_COMPOSE=O kwin --replace &

If it works, you can make a script and put it in autostart to enable effects after every login to kde.

I had the same problem in my 32bit installation (hard to tell if the reason was a kernel update, but I doubt it). Currently I run 64bit, and the upgrade to the newest kernel thankfully didn't mess up Kwin effects.

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

I have exactly the same problem.

"KWIN_COMPOSE=O" does not work.

I can only find this in .xsession logs

kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::detectDriverAndVersion: GL vendor is "NVIDIA Corporation"
kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::detectDriverAndVersion: GL renderer is "GeForce Go 7300/PCI/SSE2"
kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::detectDriverAndVersion: GL version is "2.1.2 NVIDIA 185.18.14"
kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::detectDriverAndVersion: XGL: no
kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::detectDriverAndVersion: Detected driver "nvidia" , version "185.18.14"
kwin(4030) KWin::CompositingPrefs::applyDriverSpecificOptions: nvidia >= 173.14.12, enabling compositing
kwin(4030) KWin::Workspace::setupCompositing: Compositing is turned off in options or disabled

In xorg.conf I've got compositing explicitly turned on. I use the same xorg.conf as before the kernel upgrade, I have not changed anything during upgrade, only removed nouveau stuff because of dependency problems.

thank you for the tip,
unfortunately, this only fixed error message:
after re-enabling effects I am not gettyng anymore error message but effects are still missing.
Unfortunately this seems to be related to some sort of a flaw in kde 4.2.3. It is sad that after so much time kde 4 is still an early beta.

I hope that this is going to be fixed soon,

any tips how to fix this welcome!!

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

For some reason, this latest update to the nvidia drivers meant I had to edit xorg and explicitly add the composite enable option in extensions. I presume it was enabled by default before but now it's not or the update somehow deleted that section cos composite was working before? Weird!

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

On the first boot after the upgrade I couldn't activate the effects either. Nvidia module, glx extension and the likes were all running without problem, glxgears workes smoothly, but still no effects.
After I ran your suggested command, effects were turned on temporarily and after logging in/out of KDE they run normally again. Strange thing, but luckily all's right now.

I have exactly the same issues.

and no composite.

has no effect.

I tried many options in the xorg.conf, also the nvidia-173.14.18-3 driver, but no effects yet.
OpenGl works flawlessly.

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

Well I tried to register with kde.org but during the registration process I learned that my standard email address is not valid. This is qite interesting as I am using it for last couple of years. I tried another email address which thankfully was accepted, but i never got an email with activation link.

If these guys work can't even properly setup account activation, I am not surprised that kde 4 is still after one and half year at very early beta stage.

If anyone with similar problems is registered already or can register with kde.org and post questions over there would be great.

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

It's simply curiosity but can you test compiz on your laptop (I suppose you have a 7400 too).
I explain what I'm thinking ..... On my laptop I've a dual boot with 2 archlinux (1 with KDE and the other with Xfce+compiz) and compiz is extremly slow since I use the 2.6.30 kernel and the new nvidia driver, so I think that those problems are caused by the driver or the kernel and not by the desktop environments....

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

In my first post I pointed out that I don't have any problems with kde effects when running 2.6.29.5
Because I have several kernels installed (I got rid of git because these are super unstable recently: either issues with IO (fixed already) or not being able to install nvidia driver. The last one is patch pending from nvidia):
2.6.29.4-grsec
2.6.29.5
2.6.29.5-grsec
2.6.30-ARCH
2.6.30-vanilla
2.6.30-zen2

all of them have nvidia module pre-installed so I simply reboot to each of the kernels and directly to the GUI/KDE
I can tell you that all kernels below 2.6.30 works well with kde and desktop effects are enabled
Any of 2.6.30 will have problems with kde desktop effects
On all these kernels I tested two nvidia drivers:
180.53
185.18.4
with exactly the same results

I don't want to install compiz as on top of hefty kde because I do a lot of raw pictures editing. This requires plenty of RAM and disk space.

Based on reports that I have seen published, these may be two different issues:
1) failing desktop effects with 2.6.30
2) slow video (not only nvidia) after update to 2.6.30

of course, it might be that these issues are related because failing desktop effects are caused by composite not loading

I have the same problem in Archlinux 64bit
I Use Compiz and some effects run slow. glxgears score aprox 9000 FPS with a Nvidia 9600GT.
before update kernel + nvidia drivers all run ok..

I tried to boot with nooacpi and noapic options and desktop effects were activated but they were extremly slow.... That is a little evolution ... and a way to think...

I also tried to put "acpi=off noapic" , but nothing changed. I still cannot get compositing on.

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

well according to kde developers this is

Driver bug. Seems that KWin cannot create an OpenGL context (Meaning no way to
display composited windows).

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=197989

it is marked as "resolved", still this does not help much I am affraid.

Re: [solved] kdemod 4.2.4 and kernel 2.6.30 lost effects

I post just to tell that this issue is not general, because I don't experience the lost of desktop effects after the recent updates. My installation is 64 bits with NVIDIA GPU GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i integrated chipsets.
Recent relevant updates :

[2009-06-24 11:29] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.29.4-1 -> 2.6.30-5)
[2009-06-24 11:29] upgraded nvidia-utils (180.51-1 -> 185.18.14-1)
[2009-06-24 11:29] upgraded nvidia (180.51-1 -> 185.18.14-1)

My xorg.conf file is minimal :

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option         "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT, TV"
    Option         "NoPowerConnectorCheck" "true"
    Option         "ConnectToAcpid" "false"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
    Option         "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

I think it can be useful to know that this configuration works on some machines, and that the problem doesn't appear everywhere.

Edit : I forgot to mention I use the KDE 4.2.4 packages from the extra repository.

thanks,
I am using these options for very long time (long before I started using Arch) as they speed up nvidia loading. Of course this is not general problem and may be related to specific hardware (e.g. Go 7400) as someone mentioned this earlier. Even with Go 7400 this is not always the issue. This worries me even more as it resembles an error causing by nvidia driver that randomly (no relation to the hardware or linux implementation) caused X crash. It took few years before this problem was finally fixed.

Try installing your Nvidia drivers again. That worked for me. (with Fedora Core 10, a similar graphic board 7300 and the same nvidia driver).

Hope it helps.
