Any time I try to start up firefox, I get this error message:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.0.11 and 1.9.0.11.
EDIT: Further poking has revealed that GRE refers to Gecko, which is part of xulrunner. The current version of xulrunner is 1.9.1.
EDIT 2: Tried reinstalling firefox, and discovered there were conflicts that prevented it from reinstalling, so I forced a reinstall, but now it just hangs.

maybe uninstall firefox and xulrunner
run
pacman -Sy xulrunner firefox
hopefully synchronizing local and remote pacman db will help

Sounds like you still have firefox 3.0.11 installed.

I did, however I removed it, and later firefox-optimized.

Same here. I upgraded to 3.5 and now it won't start. The process starts, but it never uses any cycles. No error messages of any kind.

Didn't work :-/
As I mentioned before you need to uninstall first firefox, xulrunner and obviously whatever firefox dependencies you have installed,
after that run
pacman -Sy firefox xulrunner
if firefox crashes after loading simply move ~/.mozilla to ~/mozilla

Hi,
Same problem here firefox 3.5 will not start and no terminal output.Tried everything on this thread with no luck.
Firefox will start as root but that is it.After trying everything Seamonkey was installed and is working OK.
I am thinking of raising a bug.
Would be glad of any help thanks,Chris.

I would try to install firefox from sources ( http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html ). If this works, then evidently this is a bug in Arch packaging, otherwise your problem can be related to the firefox sources.
i hope this will help.
Arch packaging has some issues no doubt. I my case, each time when i upgrade firefox with pacman I am loosing saved passords. This is not a case when I install firefox from sources.

It's not just the Arch packaging. I installed it from Mozilla's tarball and it did the same exact thing. I opened up a terminal, went to the untarred directory, ran ./mozilla, and it just sat there. I ran top in another tab and firefox was not using any cycles at all.
Anyone else have any luck?

FYI
This is a bug that Mozilla are aware off and working on it i assume.Many post re this on moz user forums.Seems worst with Mac version ? . Since FF3.5 will not start at all here except as root may append thar info to Mozilla if no one else has.
So me no post a bug with Arch as upsteam bug but all info on how to revert back to FF 3 would be usefull for admited noobs such as myself .Meantime Seamonkey going well.
Best Wishes Chris.

if you do not clean pacman cache, you should have previous version of firefox in
/var/cache/pacman/pkg
you can also download it from this site:
http://schlunix.org/archlinux/
finally you can get binary from mozilla server

maybe uninstall firefox and xulrunner
Did you try with a new firefox profile?
In a term : firefox -P

Mmm, I upgraded xulrunner first (to 1.9.1) and then firefox (to 3.5), a couple of hours ago. No problems at all.
box1: Arch (linux-3.17-rc5)
box2: Gentoo (linux-3.17-rc5)
wm: subtle

No problems over here, either.

I had "firefox-3.5" from AUR installed and wanted to switch to the regular "firefox" package. The same error-message appeared here, but after removing firefox-3.5+xulrunner and then installing firefox, xulrunner and libgnomeui (don't know if the last one was really neccessary) it all works here.

in post #8 I suggested this, however as it was explained already this is a bug introduced by mozilla. Hopefully they will fix it soon.

I'm having the same problems...But removing and installing doesn't work for me...
At the moment I'm using epiphany, but let's wait for a fix soon...

Hi,
As an experiment tried a few things here,as follows;
starting firefox as firefox -P as suggested above;
Created a new user with only the openbox window manager and a xterm running and starting firefox from that;
Renaming .gtkrc-2.0 and .mozilla {creted by seamonkey} with .save extension on my usual home direectoty and trying firefox;
chown 'd my home directory and tried again;
deleted /usr/lib/mozilla after de-install flash-plugin and trying firefox;
deinstall seamonkey xulrunner firefox flash plugin and reinstalling firefox 3.5 also libgnomeui and trying firefox;
And no difference;
Firefox will always start as root but never as a user or not within the 20 mins waited at max when top shows firefox to be running at zero cpu usage and 0.1 % memory usage.
Also from the mozilla user forums it does seem that some of us get serious problems with starting Firefox ,took several hours for one patient soul who was able to wait that long and others who have no problem such as here if Firefox run as root.
Best Wises Chris.

Could someone provide a link to the bug report?
There are a few bug reports on mozilla around FF will not or slow to start.The relevant one for me is;
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ bug no 498355
Going by 498355.After de-installing libtrash FF 3.5 *STARTS* when logged in as user chris.I can safely assume that FF started in a terminal after su'ing to root since i did not have libtrash active as root.
So problem *SOLVED* here except as regards how to protect me from me in inadvertant deletions from pcmanfm,he he.
If above is useful to a few others please say so and hopefully one of us,if not myself,will mark the thread solved provided that be correct given the initial post.It maybe,that i amongst others,have hi-jacked this thread but unintentionally and if so sorry.
Best Wishes Chris.

Hi! After your post I checked my system, and I haven't libtrash installed. So I installed and removed it, without any success on the start of firefox.
I read the pacman information after the installation of libtrash, and it says to do "unset LD_PRELOAD" to disable libtrash.
But I havent installed now libtrash on my system, so I did "unset LD_PRELOAD" as my user, and even if I havent libtrash installed, after that I can finally open firefox as user!!!
So if someone still have problems with firefox, maybe could try this tip...
Thanks to all !!

Great,
Falcata..as regards the 'Could not find compatible GRE.......' and xulrunner;
On my system which now works OK /usr/bin/xulrunner is a symlink to /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.1/xulrunner and it seems a good idea to me to check that it is on your machine.Possibly with the forced install of FF 3.5 something has got tangled ?? .
Good luck Chris.

marconato, I tried that and it did not work. I still have to run it as root to run it. And by that, I mean running it with su -c "firefox". Running it as root with sudo does not work.
