Hi people,
Just in case someone else has the same problem before the driver gets updated: my machine was locking up while starting X (after the kernel update to 2.6.30.1-1), so I've rebuilt the NVIDIA driver with ABS.
Problem solved.
Card: GeForce 7400 Go.

Only major kernel upgrades should require a module rebuild. Did you upgrade to 2.6.30.1 from 2.6.30 or 2.6.29? Either way, the nvidia package from [extra] appears to work fine with 2.6.30.1 on my desktop (8800 gts 512).

No it does not work,
The problem is a bug introduced to the kernel 2.6.30.x in PAT
in short whatever you do, PAT cannot be disabled (even if deselected in .config, as one can see later in messages.log)
You need to patch nvidia 185.18.14 with this patch:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … 112&page=2
if you don't, then all setups with CPUs not supporting PAT will have problems withi compositing (either way slow or disabled)
So ideally would be to patch Arch package for nvidia

Not experiencing any problems here either, kernel 2.6.30.1, GeForce 8600 GTS, latest driver upgrade to 185.18.14 created no issues.

do you have Go 7400?
no
do you have CPU that do not support PAT?
no

maybe you should submit a bug report instead of doing whatever you do now
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

this is not Arch linux fault, so I can't file bug with Arch
I submitted bug for kde and nvidia.
I have got an response from kde (not their fault) and from nvidia (link with patch in my first post).
I don't use PKGBUILD for video drivers.
Moreover someone nice updated PKGBUILD for patched nvidia:

Broch is right. Log indeed included message about PAT not being supported on this
CPU (Core Duo T2300 @ 1.6 GHz).
Tried the patched version and it apparently solved the issue.
I didn't notice the lack of composite, as it was already disabled in my xorg config.
And yes, I've upgraded from 2.6.30.

bug-reports are also used for requesting new features or applied patches for arch packages. They come to the attention of the package maintainer much faster then a forum thread.
Asking for a patch on a package is a very good reason to open a bug-report.
Stand back, intruder, or i'll blast you out of space! I am Klixon and I don't want any dealings with you human lifeforms. I'm a cyborg!

shrug,
first you need to get patch,
Arch devs will apply patch but will not request/develop it. This is understandable (otherwise Arch would become a factory). Not to mention, that I did try this and was adised to contact software developer, so in the end contacting source is much faster way.
Point is that I don't really care about opinion how should I proceed: patch is available, link is posted, and as I mentioned even PKGBUILD is available. For me topic is closed.
