[solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

After a big upgrade a few days ago I get a garbled screen whenever I focus a window with a Qt app in Xfce, like VLC or VirtualBox. If I focus (by clicking on titlebar/ or select from taskbar) a non-Qt app the screen returns to normal.  I could not capture the screen corruption with scrot so I used a very crappy cam:

normal:
015808210709.jpg
garbled:
435708210709.jpg

I see no error messages in Xorg.0.log (or any other log). I don't know which configs /packages are relevant to post here.

update 1:
Someone with Gnome seems to have the same problem

update 2:

After restarting X VLC works without the problem, but when I start VirtualBox (archlinuxfr/virtualbox_bin 3.0.2-2) the problem reappears for both VirtualBox and VLC.

update 3:

Compositing seems to be involved. If I turn it off the problem disappears, not a real solution, but at least I can use my apps.

xorg.conf

(...)
Section "Extensions"
  Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection

update 4:

Workaround is to downgrade both libgl and ati-dri to version 7.4.4-1 .

(see: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrade_packages)

I'm having the exact same problem. But no clue what the reason might be. Searching the problem showed qt related problems.

I'm curious, what kind of graphics cards do you have?

I have a ATI X1400. I am using the x86-video-ati 6.12.2-2 driver from extra.

I have an ATI 1200 and am using the same driver. I wonder if it has something to do with it? Or perhaps the latest X updates? I'm going to try downgrading.

Might be an idea, but there are so many packages involved that could be the cause. B.t.w. I tried the aur/x86-video-radeonhd-git driver but that didn't help.

These were the upgrades after which the problem appeared. There are some packages that obviously have nothing to do with xorg but it must be one of these:

Re: [solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

I noticed the garbles after installing:

[2009-07-22 10:12] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.30.1-1 -> 2.6.30.2-1)
[2009-07-22 10:12] upgraded virtualbox-ose (3.0.2-1 -> 3.0.2-2)

lspci:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600]

I'm using Openbox with xf86-video-ati 6.12.2-2, qt 4.5.2-3, and qt3 3.3.8-12.  I just installed vlc and the odd colors occur with that as well.

Do you know on which day you did an upgrade that started it? Could you post it here?
For example the output of:

egrep  '2009-07.+(installed|upgraded).+' /var/log/pacman.log

This may be localized to 64-bit installs...which would mean either we discount...or only count the lib32 packages. Not sure which, haha.

Re: [solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

I just downgraded ati-dri (7.5-1 -> 7.4.4-1) and everything was back to normal, but I don't know if this is the only problem package.  I'm on a 32-bit system.

Re: [solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

After downgrading ati-dri the problem was solved on my end as well. Perhaps we should add this to that bug report?

I'm using 64-bit so it doesn't seem specific to either. I'll try downgrading that thanks.

Peter

I think everything is on track and I would assume the next ati-dri update will either include the patch mentioned in the bug report or the upstream source will include the patch.  It wouldn't hurt to add any input to the report though if you feel like adding to it.

I applied the patch and recompiled ati-dri 7.5-1 and I have no issues.

Hm.. downgrading ati-dri (7.5-1 -> 7.4.4-1) doesn't fix it here.

I exited Openbox to the command-line and then ran startx after I downgraded.

I added a blurb to the bug report.

Sadly In my case downgrading to ati-dri 7.4.4-1(or 7.4.2-1), and restarting x did not help. I'm going to dowgrade some more stuff tomorrow. It is the Arch way hmm.

Re: [solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

I downgraded libgl to 7.4.4-1 and that fixed it for me.
