upgrade make my X server hang forever

Hi all

after my last upgrade from kernel 29 to 30 I cannot get into my linux system as my X will not load - it doesn't give me the console login and it won't allow me to use any other ALT+Fn

I managed to get into into the logs and this is what I found

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

I think this looks more like an error in the NVIDIA driver than in X itself. If you have a xorg.conf, I would try moving it to another location and letting it boot up without a xorg.conf, or set it up to use the vesa. Also, it seems like the problem generates a kernel error, so you might try moving/asking at the Kernel and Hardware Issues forum.

I've been gone for a couple of days. I, too, have an NVIDIA upgrade (among many others; what packages were upgraded in your last pacman -Syu), so I'll let that run and get back to you.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

Well, the system upgrade worked for me. I did, however, have to shut down my X and remove the nvidia driver and then reattempt to install the nvidia because it could not update the module while it was running. I would test that theory by booting into single user mode (at GRUB, instead of selecting the arch boot with enter, press e, and then goto the kernel line and press e again; append the digit "1" to the end of the line), and then running

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-utils-185.18.31-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-185.18.31-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Let me know if this fixes the problem.

The update also broke my system, same symptoms.

Posted a message to arch-dev-public let's see the responses.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

I had pretty much the same thing happening to my computer the other day (or week) and it took me about a life time to work out that the Oops I had was because of my wifi driver, rt73usb.

As clear as it might seem that X is the culprit it might actually not be. I found the rt73-module to be faulty by pure luck.

So a small piece of advice, don't stare blind on X.... also look at your other modules and try to find someone who can read those awful Oops-messages.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

Same thing happened to me with a cataylst driver on my laptop.  Hangs forever.  I had just updated my system about a day before I applied this update, and the kernel upgrade definitely wasn't the culprit.  I get a console login on my laptop, but whenever I startx it'll just hang forever and not respond to any input other than holding down the power button.  Everything was working fine with the kernel, but then the last update, which included
*libxcb
*xcb-proto
*xcb-util
*mlocate
*libx11
*xorg-server
*xf86-input-evdev
*flac
*hal-info

Shared between my two systems (one of which is my desktop, with a nvidia graphics chip and the nvidia proprietary drivers).
I tried downgrading x-server and all the libs that were related to X, but that only broke dbus.

I'm afraid to reboot my desktop now...

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

Hi, I had this same problem on upgrading my nvidia driver from 185.18.14 to 185.18.31, so you could try downgrading if you have this problem. If you can't log in because of this issue (I couldn't) then try (when your bootloader screen shows up) editing your grub kernel line from something like

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=873

to something like

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=873 1

Which will boot you into single-user mode so you can fix the issue or edit your config not to start KDM/GDM/whatever on boot.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

the problem was the nvidia driver - It took me a while to figure it out - I changed the xorg.conf to use the vesa driver which works fine

then after that the kicker was crashing continuously for some unknown reason - now that I have just upgraded to xorg server 1.6.3 it is not doing it anymore

one small consideration: I understand being cutting edge and all but if linux systems have to become unbootable everytime you upgrade them (this seems to be the recent trend, especially when there is a X or nvidia upgrade) then I am not surprised it is never the year of the linux desktop...

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

This isn't just an nvidia issue, as I'm experiencing the same thing with Intel and others are reporting problems with ATI.

UPDATE:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15762

Downgrading to xorg-server-1.6.2-1 did the trick for my intel setup.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

Downgrade to previous X server didn't do anything for me on my ATI rig.  Still haven't rebooted my desktop.  Starting X as root isn't any different than as a normal user.

Does anybody have an update on this situation?  Are we supposed to do away with xorg.conf or something? I'd like to be able to use a GUI on my laptop again...

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

Okay, switched to the open source drivers and everything works fine.  I recompiled the catalyst drivers and catalyst utils, that didn't work, so I tried switching and I'm all the happier for it.

Make sure to run X -configure as root when you install the drivers

Hello,

Same problem, black screen on startup with latest nvidia driver and latest xorg from repository.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

I have exactly the same problem, so I downgraded xorg-server to 1.6.2-1, but nothing changed. Then I downgraded nvidia driver and utils from 185.18.31 to 185.18.19, and still exactly the same problem.

THEN, I downgraded nvidia driver and utils all the way to 185.18.14, and now when X starts, the screen shuts off like before, but after 3 seconds, the nvidia logo appears, and then everything works! I'd really like to get rid of the blank screen for 2 seconds, then the shut-off screen for 3 seconds. I'll be checking back on this thread  for any updates or things that have worked for others.

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

I have the same symptoms, but what I have found is that the newest xorg requires hal working (which in fact force me to use policykit and consolekit - what drives me crazy). Without hal being started xorg just hangs. My question is - is it really needed to install and use hal, policykit and consolekit ??!!

Re: upgrade make my X server hang forever

I had the same problem. What worked for me was that instead of starting X through gdm (runlevel 5 set in inittab - I'm using gnome as a desktop environment), I boot in runlevel 3 and then start X manually (of course, after I modified .xinitrc to start a gnome session). It's just a work-around, but at least it didn't require any downgrades, neither for the X server nor for my nvidia driver.

See the bug ticket I posted above...there's a solution there without HAL.  And for the truly lazy (hey I don't blame ya) you can grab the patched package here (for i686 only):

Link removed--updated version of xorg-server coming to a mirror near you.

This may not resolve the issue for everyone, but it did the trick for my Intel GMA.  See the bug ticket for details of the patch.

Just had the same issue (black screen, etc.) and downgrading nvidia to 185.18.14 did the trick for me. Will be checking the thread for news though, to see when upgrading is safe again.
