Okay so im sure im not the only one this issue is buggin. Why does it take so long to log into 4.3? In 4.2 it was very quick, but now theres a least a 8 second delay after the last icon has loaded (KDE logo) until i get to the desktop.
Could it be wrong permissions somewhere or is it just a KDE bug?
Btw im runnig KDEmod..:P

Check your logs and see if there is anything suspicious in them.

Got this too b0uncyfr0. Before it was probably about 4 seconds, now I'd say 8 to 10. I've read that KDE 4.3 is using a good amount more of memory, but to do this seems to be a bit over the top.

Hello b0uncyfr0!
Which display manager do you use ? Is it independent from display manager ? Is there the same problem i you try to use another one ?

Do you mean login manager. I use KDM. Im gong to try it with entranced now.
EDIT: No difference, it takes the same time with entranced..

What happens on the stdout/stderr if you try to run the login procedure from console (init level 3)?

I have the same issue, and the arch machine of my parents, too. I use a nVidia graphics card, they have a VIA Unichrome. In general I have a MacbookPro v4, they have an Acer Aspire 1362LC, so in general we use totally different hardware components.
I have looked in every logfile I can think of, disabled all services that are started by KDE, changed the phonon backend etc, nothing seems to help. Today's update to KDE 4.3.1 hasn't fixed it.
This bug is a little bit annoying... but at least the computer doesn't seem to hang, because you can press the left mouse button and KDM will disappear, you can also use the desktop, but something is waiting in the background. After some seconds (10 or so) the taskbar and systray gets filled and the rest of the applications start up.
I already asked in #kde and #kde-devel, but they have no clue. For me it seems that only Archlinux has this issue, I know at least 3 guys that use Gentoo and Mandriva and they don't have this problem... anyone has found out why the startup is so slow at the moment?

Perhaps its akonadi search in the background.

Same here... I figured it was supposed to be that way for some reason.

I have turned off akonadi completely, but it still starts slowly...

I'm using Arch's KDE (not KDEmod) with KDM, and a +1 from me; there's a long delay after the KDE logo, and heavy disk I/O seconds after plasma is functional. The delay is significantly worse than 4.2. Although once the I/O has settled down the all applications are quite responsive.

+1
Edit: I installed Arch64 core in Virtualbox 3.04 with only kdebase and the delay is still there. I'm not using an xorg.conf file and I'm loading kdm via DAEMONS=( ... alsa kdm)

Same here, I use no xorg file, and start X via startx.

Don't forget: The more you confirm a problem the faster it get fixed.
Seriously: Did anyone check if this has already been reported to KDE?

I've got the same issue. Using Nvidia 6150, but I don't think it's a video card problem. I've completed removed akonadi and I still have the problem.

Same problem in KDE Foruns: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=76325
Could it really be Arch related issue?

Could it really be Arch related issue?
No. Simply because ubuntuusers also face this problem.

this seems to be the same bug... its marked as unconfirmed, despite happens since kde4.3 beta2...

I have the same problem.
Maybe nepomuk has something to do with it, since if you disable the splash, nepomuk takes a little while to come up...

Yup, it's almost as slow time-wise as it is the first time you start KDE4 when all the KDE config folders and files have to build themselves from scratch. I think the KDE devs are aware of it, but I still wish it were quicker like it was before KDE 4.3 was released.

Same problem here.
I took a closer look at logs during kde startup and found out that it hangs when loading plasma (/usr/lib/libkdeinit4_plasma-desktop.so). I have moved libkdeinit4_plasma-desktop.so and then KDE started fast. I have put library back and poked around with widgets. It turned out that panel is causing this slowdown. I have moved all widgets (tray, task manager, clock, ...) from panel directly to desktop and removed panel - KDE started fast again. Even after adding empty panel to desktop, KDE starts up slowly. However, there are some situations when KDE starts up fast with panel (usually when it is not maximized), but it appears to be more or less random. It always starts up fast without panel.
Can anyone confirm that? It is best to try it on new account.

Place all plasmas on desktop and tried removing panel as you did Zerg2000 but couldn't replicate your results - kde 4.3.1 booted in nearly the same time. Looks like your moving the library temporarily had something to do with this.

Yes, I could not reproduce it in 100% cases today. But I' have finally (I hope) found what is causing this. This time reproducible in 100% so far. Right click on desktop > desktop settings > wallpaper type -> change it to anything other than image (color for example). Each time I log in to KDE with image wallpaper, it takes 10 seconds longer during splash when KDE logo is displayed.
So it seems to be a problem with /usr/lib/kde4/plasma_wallpaper_image.so or something that interacts with it.
