Hi, I followed the instructions posted here http://www.archlinux.org/news/464/ to update vi on my system. So I deleted /usr/bin/view and /usr/bin/rview, then updated my system as usual. But now vi works terribly: it has no more syntax highlighting, keys behave differently and I cannot use it as before. I tried also to reinstall it, but with no success. The installed version is 050325-1, so I think my mirror is in sync with the main repo.
What can I do to have back my old vi? Thanks

Install vim.

Thanks stefan, but is there another way which does not make me install vim?

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I'm pretty sure (the package) vi has *never* had syntax highlighting. (It used to be a stripped-down version of vim; now it's ex/vi, a different vi clone.) If you want syntax highlighting you need a more fully featured editor. Perhaps you could tell us how you were invoking vi?
Oh, and if I'm wrong about the stripped-down vi not having syntax highlighting, someone will correct me and you can disregard this post.

I used (and use) to invoke vi by simply typing vi (pretty smart, eh?). I knew that vi was very basic but since I switched to Arch I fouund it more rich than I used to know. And I can bet my house that it had syntax highlighting befor I deleted those two files...
By the way, I tried to install vim, but it also has not syntax highlighting (I tried it on a bash shell script file, with .sh extension).

Those syntax highlighting problems are discussed on this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=80120
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Ok, sorry for the double thread . I'll continue in the other. But since the devs found the time to post a warning for the file deletion issue, they should have mentioned as well that the new vi is the true vi, rather than being a disguised vim like it was in the past...

Well I just removed vi and reinstalled vim after the update, and have had no problems.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.
