hello!
i have yet another "respawning too fast" problem. i have installed SLiM and put the usual
x:5:respawn:/etc/bin/slim >& /dev/null
line in inittab. when booting up, the respawning too fast thingy appears and keeps on going. the main difference between my problem and the others on the forum is that i have no apparent symptom at all: everything works fine, except for tty1 where the line keeps being printed. moreover tty1 is almost unuseable because it's extremely slow.
i've checked rc.conf and no login manager is started as daemon.
i've tried commenting out the line in inittab and after reboot no login manager started, as expected. i've run
sudo /etc/bin/slim
and no output was given: it worked perfectly.
i'm baffled. does anyone have an idea about what's causing such a behaviour?
thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forums wombat.mate.
Shouldn't that be:
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null

I don't think you need the respawn option. Try this:
x:5:once:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

It is most likely X not working, if you boot into run level 3 and run startx from the login does it work?

@skottish: of course it should have been /usr/bin/slim, sorry for the typo
changing "respawn" to "once" worked perfectly! thank you gray! but i think i've found respawn on archwiki... i must find the article and edit it.
anyway tty1 is still very slowing and often not responding... it's not a big deal since the other consoles work fine, but can you think of a reason for this?
thank you again!

There is a patch floating around for that, but it has some drawbacks I think.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=475249 seems to be related.
