Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

...And it works pretty well too! http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop-linux I know what you're thinking "Well I'm too lazy to install it, I want a PKGBUILD!!" One step ahead of you: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31063 Have fun watching your favorite shows smile For me this works much better than watching inside a browser. And also it's native 64 bit (take note of this Google...)

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Props doorknob.

Man, I guess I can't use Hulu...

THE HULU SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE HULU SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

I was going to have Hulu control my nuclear bombs, my war planes, my gps, and my grandma's iron lung... Damn.

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Good for hulu.   Good to see them listening to Linux users too.  I don't understand how a desktop version would be any better than the browser version but understand how some people may want it.  Though, I got to admit, I haven't tried it yet. big_smile

Thanks for PKGBUILD doorknob, maybe I'll get a chance to try it in a bit.

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Was good to try this, I tried hulu through Chromium and Icecat but it would crash both due to some flash issue.
Running the hulu desktop through one of the vpn servers I use works well, it's pretty neat if you like those sort of layouts.

Wow that's exciting!  And yes it also disappoints me that so many video websites are US only.  E.g. veoh (don't know if this changed) and hulu (which is one of the best).

It doesn't say you can't, only that it is "not intended."  However, since Hulu is an alien plot maybe you shouldn't.  smile

So spoof it! Seriously though, the desktop client is actually more stable than the website from what I've seen.

For me, the desktop version is a lot easier to navigate (their site isn't the best, IMO), and playback is a lot smoother to I think. And for HTPCs, this is almost crucial tongue Too bad they're US only though, that leaves a lot of people unable to use it.

This fails to install through yaourt for me, how would I go about installing the .deb?

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

guessing there's some change to the .deb (PKGBUILD needs change?) as it fails validity check after download. not sure.

I had to download the deb, md5sum it, then update the PKGBUILD with the new md5. After that makepkg built it with no problem.

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Haven't had anything to do with hash checking / md5  etc. for some time. Is it logical to ask you what the md5sum is?   In any event, thanks!

UPDATE COMMENT: was going to dl parano though it's big. not right for my gnomeless system.  so, I'm looking to see if I can use mhash. if it's even an app. maybe it's a library only.  all fun! Really should get going with md5.

Removed mhash and installed md5deep from AUR. Not going to have the time to get that going immediately-ish, though looks like the one to use, perhaps.

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Fixed the PKGBUILD, they released a new version (0.9.3), causing the md5sum check to fail. Was too busy to fix it until now, but it's working fine now smile

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

hehehe woo woo wooo hoo!  nice all round - helping many of us!!

UPDATE COMMENT: (all as mentioned around here before) I did a:

pacman -Ql flashplugin

found this:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

put the FULL line in the right spot in the:

.huludesktop    file

and it's brilliant! thanks.
The above I had to recall recently and thought someone like me could use the reminder how to find stuff. Primary yet easy to sometimes forget somewhat I found.

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

So, I recently upgraded lirc and lirc-utils (it no longer spikes CPU usage like crazy smile). I discovered after the upgrade, even though irw was working, hulu was not getting any key presses from my remote. Turns out there was a change in lirc which no longer created /dev/lircd. Instead, you'll need to alter your ~/.huludesktop config file to say the following:

lirc_device = /var/run/lirc/lircd

instead of

lirc_device = /dev/lircd

you also want to be sure to get lirc-utils 0.8.6-3 (or newer), as 0.8.6-2 twisted config files up a bit..

hope that helps anyone who upgraded lirc recently and lost the ability to use their remote in hulu...

Re: Native Hulu Desktop Linux Client released!

Hello all - has anyone had success getting lirc working with huludesktop. I have read on the huludesktop site I need to enable lircd with the -r option. I'm a bit confused about what file to enter this in so it starts with that option. Any help with this? Be nice, I'm very new with linux smile

No, something Hulu-esq might, but not Hulu.

You can get around the America only  limitation.
