Hello there.
I've red through forums but it seems I can't get KDE right. The problem occured after the last updates. While I'm typing after some time X just restarts. I tried to remove ~/.kde4 but the problem remains. I tried to remove /etc/Xorg.conf but it keep on crashing. It's scaring me what is going on?
Here is ~/..xsession-errors output:

check the following lofiles:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/kdm.log
and if you are using the rsyslogd daemon post your /var/log/messages.log pls
edit: it could be not X, could be chromium or even kde but its weird though

well i can't really give a hint about that
but anyway, check your logs - both of you have errors:
@Jodell: you got this "(EE) intel(0): Failed to initialize kernel memory manage"
@frojnd: you got this "(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)"

I think I may be having the a related problem. Would you guys try something and see if it crashes yours?
Open konsole, Type: sshfs 192
It crashes mine every time as I hit the 2.

It is not KDE related problem. I did install sshfs and typed what you posted, but nothing happened (Nvidia)

I tried it and it went to the kdm login screen like what it does when press the "enter" key sometimes but it seems to be random. Yours however, seems easily reproducible. I wonder what is causing it? I also used your advice from your thread but it still happens.
@quarkup: Can you tell me what to do to fix the error? I'm a noob at linux unfortunately but I'm using Arch to learn
Edit: spelling

@Jodell: Yeah after I deleted .kde4 it seems to be fixed, but started back soon after I marked it solved. I figured I would wait it out and watch the forum until someone else could reproduce.

Hi, I've been having crashes also while typing. Happened in two computers: a laptop and a desktop with intel and nvidia cards respectively, so I guess is not a driver problem. The crashes were repeatable and there was more than one way to trigger it. For example, I could open kwrite, type '=' then 'Enter'... crash. I think the characters that caused the crash where different in each computer.
I tried removing kdm from the deamons in rc.conf and starting KDE manually. It seems that the crashes have stopped. Could it be a kdm problem? This is weird.

well the time now its actually 9:30 PM in my country.
yesterday nite, that last post of mine was at 01:21:24 AM, meanwhile I was sleepin' !!!
BTW:
@Malakin: the kwrite '=' then enter DOES NOT WORK! (thanks every kde developer for this lol )
well I don't really have any of those "bugs" and I'm not a KDE developer, SO i cannot backtrace a kind of bug or something that I actually don't even have.
but it seems too weird.
you need to do your contribution work either by:
- going to our archlinux bugpage: http://bugs.archlinux.org/ then search for this bugs or submit info so the dev's can exactly know what's happening and patch it (this way youll get what you want faster than using the kde's bugs probably)
- going to bugs.kde.org and search then post this issue there (or in the kde's forum) - u should do it anyway
good luck mates
and hey, try the IRC #archlinux @ freenode channel
you may get attention to someone that can really give you another hint on that.

I have the same problem you have, where similair things consistently results in a crash. Everytime I typed "pacman -S dvd+rw-tools" my KDE would crash. It doesn't make sense, lol.

problem appears to be in hal, if keyboard is configured through xorg.conf, keyboard works ok

Confirmed about typing; the vilest character on my keyboard is "2", though Enter also cannot be trusted . Also my browsers (Firefox, Opera) give me hard to kill 100% CPU loads, randomly but pretty often. The 100% loads are generated by X. All the trouble started after the upgrade to KDE 4.3.2.

I stopped kdm and used startx to start kde. I have not had a crash in almost 24 hours and it is consistently reproducible with kdm running.

Having the same "exact" problem. Though exact is a misnomer since there is no exact 100% reproducible issue I guess..
I can second what some have been saying about the evilness of '2' and 'enter' on my computer since upgrading to KDE 4.3.2. Even typing this message I was cringing every time I have to hit the number. Twice KDE / X (not sure which) crashed when I hit the 2 while in Chromium. The third time I typed it in it was fine.
Does not seem to be a driver issue, I've got an ATI Xpress 200 5955 with an AMD proc.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one - I was hesitant to even come on the forums because I was wondering how exactly to describe "KDE crashes intermittently when I hit 2, Enter, or other keys while in various different applications doing totally different things", lol.
Any other people reporting success using startx instead of KDM? I'd be willing to do it for the time being, but it's a workaround not a fix!

So far we know. Removing kdm in /etc/rc.conf under DAEMONS is work around to prevent X/KDE from crashing.
No matter if you remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf crashes reamins.
No matter if you remove ~/.kde4 crashes remains.
It only happenes no matter what you doing but at the very end pressed enter.
Has anyone report a bug here http://bugs.archlinux.org/ or here https://bugs.kde.org/

I would go about filing a bug report but isn't one of the basic requirements of a good bug report "steps to reproduce" (not being sarcastic)? That's why I haven't filed one yet.

Just to add. I'm getting the same problem. However if I use the numeric keypad to enter numbers I don't get the crash. This is helpful to me as my password contains four numbers in it so every time the screen saver came on I would crash KDE now as long as I remember to use the numeric keypad I don't get any crashes.
Weird huh?

Hi mates,
after having ArchLinux working seamlessly for more than a year, I have recently experienced the very same problems as described in this thread. As I type, the X server crashes (I think it really disconnects and re-connects all in a row) so I lose my working session and I have to log-in again and open all programs again. As far as I have been able to test (didn't have much time for this though), there is no need to log in in KDM to make it crash. At least on my computer all I have to do is to type "912 912" using the numeric keys below the Fx keys, ie, not the numeric keypad. I have had problems while pressing enter too.
I'll keep looking into it because this way it is impossible to work normally.
Best regards!

Hi,
I have found a provisional solution that, at least, works on my computer. All details are at http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16587
Best regards!

I had the exact same issue on my laptop yesterday after a pacman upgrade; in 7 hours xorg or KDM restarted ~8-9 times. I noticed that the problem often occured under two circumstances:
1. Writing "rdesktop 192." in Konsole (I don't know if it was '2' or '.' causing the issue, but it seems like a lot of you have had the issue with '2')
2. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Enter to maximize/minimize a rdesktop session (perhaps the press of the Enter-key causing the issue)
I will not have access to my system before Friday or Saturday, so I can't file a bug against the Arch Linux bugtracker right now. If nobody has done it before then, I'll file a bug there.

I did actually see that bug yesterday, but I ignored it, since it said [xf86-video-ati] in the header, while I'm on Intel 960...however, it seems to be related, as I also noticed that X was started on tty3 instead of tty7 on my system.
I'll test it on my system in a few days Thanks for the hint..
