Automount problem with Gnome 2.28

Hi,

Since there isn't ayone that seems to check the newbie corner, i'll explain my problem again.
When i updated my gnome from 2.26 to 2.28, my system stopped to automount DVDs and USB devices.
Is there anyway to have this working again apart from going back to 2.26 or changing my desktop environment ?

You will need to provide at least some information:  system details, logs, error messages would all be helpful.

I assume that you get a "not authorized"-Message (or something similar, i am currently not on gnome to check what it was for me).

For me the following solved the problem:

As root create a file "/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/mount.pkla" with the following content (the filename does not really matter as long as the extension is .pkla and is located in this directory):

[allow me to mount my damn drives]
Identity=unix-group:wheel
Action=org.freedesktop.devkit.disks.*
ResultAny=yes

This allows every user in the group "wheel" (this is the group of users that are allowed to su, see here) to do anything that is related to disks. This configurationfile is found by the policykit that is used by Gnome to find out what it is allowed to do. See here for more information about policykit.

I tried the solutions given by brendan and Sternmull and it didn't change anything. I even tried them together.

to loafer : here is my system details

uname -a :
Linux Arch 2.6.31-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Oct 13 13:36:23 CEST 2009 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Concerning the usb drives, they are detected since lsusb adds a new row concerning my usb drive when i connect it.
But i'm a bit of a newbie, so wich logs should i show you ?

It's housed for me as well. Tried everything in the Wiki and on the forums but no dice. I usually run testing and compile few apps on my own but nothing that would break this. I think it's the latest Gnome, I can't even get success with using GDM. KDE works fine though.

I'm under kde atm and it works fine. I will keep kde till there is a fix for this issue.

I tried these two solutions and mounting now works in nautilus but today I noticed I can't write to usb devices (it says permission error)...what xml is responsible/need to fix for that ? Man, this whole mounting things in linux is getting old...

Just my 2 cents...

I think the problem is with gvfs and or fuse...

For me at home:

-CD\DVD-ROM Drives, USB sticks, and MP3 players can not be accessed in Gnome.
-All the above works just fine in Enlightenment and KDE on the same system
-I use Entrance for the login manager

For me at work:

-CD\DVD-ROM Drives, USB sticks, and MP3 players can not be accessed in Gnome.
-All the above works just fine in Enlightenment same system
-No login manager, just startx from the console

I say it is an issue with FUSE and or GVFS because in Enlightenment even though I can access my MP3 player via my file manager and Banshee, I can not access it using Rhythembox. Rhythembox depends on gvfs which depends on fuse, While Banshee depends on neither of those.

That's two cents... The other stuff was good info I also noticed KDE4 works fine with auto-mounting. Is there a bug report for this yet? I noticed a few different threads going...
