I really hope that an update that solves the problem will come soon. I have real trouble working with my notebook. And I see no alternative. I just thought about trying the propietory drivers as a temporary workaround but on aur.archlinux.org I read that these won't work with xorg-server-1.7.1 and above for the time being.
And as I already described, neither old drivers nor disabling KMS works for me in any combination. At the moment I live with xf86-video-ati-6.12.4-2, KMS enabled, graphical glitches and fortunately seldom freezes. EDIT: I forgot to mention the poor GUI performance (Konqueror takes 5 seconds to open and render a directory).

By the way, who marked this thread as [solved] ??

I have
warning: xorg-server-1.7.3.901-1 is up to date -- reinstalling
warning: kernel26-2.6.31.6-1 is up to date -- reinstalling
warning: xf86-video-ati-6.12.99.git20091014-1 is up to date

and problem still persists.

If I enable KMS then radeon driver will just after a few seconds in x mess up the fonts and even other graphics it looks like artifacts all over the screen.
If I disable kms with nomodeset and radeon.modeset=0 on command line, then the artifacts dissapear but system will either freeze after a while, or x will restart from nowever.

If i have KMS and radeonhd then performance is shitty, I only get 130fps on glxgears from the usual 300fps on radeon before it crashes.

I have rs690 chip, radeon express 1270.

antonikus, try the kernel and drivers form testing. Worked for me.

I have marked it [SOLVED] because disabling KMS solved the problem for me... well at least partially.
From what can I read right now it seems that it doesn't work for everybody.

With the latest updates they're gone in firefox and thunderbird (and probably any other gtk app) at least, but I still have some artifacts in KDE apps.

I've just made a Syu and found new ati drivers and stuff! Of course I installed it and then turned on KMS again - and it still works! So finally, a solution seems to be found.

I have had the glitches like you all explained, using an ATI card (Mobility Radeon 9200) and KMS. After disabling KMS as the ATI article in the wiki said, everything was fine again. I didn't touch the testing repos. Then, I made these updates for

libdrm (2.4.16-1 -> 2.4.17-2)
libgl (7.6-2 ->7.6.1-1)
ati-dri (7.6-2 -> 7.6.1-1)
mesa (7.6-2 -> 7.6.1-1)
xf86-video-ati (6.12.99.git20091014-1 ->6.12.4-2)

and turned KMS on again with the "early start" method described in the ATI article ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati ). No glitches any more.

My problems seem to have disappear through some updates in the last weeks. I don't know which updates actually solved the problem. I currently have no glitches, no freezes and no poor GUI performance anymore. I'm happy so far.
The strange git version of xf86-video-ati also disappeared. Looks like a downgrade to me, but since I ignored the git versions because they didn't work for me, nothing changed for me except that pacman now does not want to install the git version anymore.

The performance is great as with Arch as usual, resizing windows and stuff does not last longer than normal.

I did pacman -Syu yesterday, and it seems that glitches are gone. Everything seems to work right now, except one thing
Now when KMS is enabled Xorg eats 50% of my RAM, all the time. I will take a look at this problem today and post what possibly can be wrong.

Strange... I still have glitches using the latest updates and the RadeonHD driver (KMS disabled as is default now).
