Keyboard no longer works in X for most but not all users

Here is a bizarre one:

I ran a pacman -Syu yesterday afternoon, from a console window whilst in my KDE session. It seemed to go well, I then logged off and another user tried to log on.

Initially there appeared to be a problem with the nvidia drivers not loading due to some error. As a quick fix I reverted back to the Xorg "nv" drivers instead and that worked.

Alas the keyboard does not, for any other user other than me, nor any newly created users. The keyboard is so dead the numlock key does not even work, yet for me everything is fine.

I took copies of the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log for me and a user that does not work and ran a diff on them. There was no difference (other than the start time).

I have nothing in the directory /etc/had/fdi/policy, and never have had.

Affects me as well....
Using XFCE with SLIM, cannot even log in. Sometimes the keys dont' work at all, sometimes all my keypresses are the same key (wwwww, or zzzzz, or.... ). And no mouse at all.
Happened yesterday after pacman -Syu.
Have Acer Travelmate 4502, with ATI card, tried with the automatic xorg config (when there's no xorg.conf) set, and also with the "vesa" driver (that I used a lot before), both the same...

In Xorg.0.log there are these lines:

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
(WW) Disabling Keyboard0
(WW) Disabling USB Mouse

In other forums (mostly Ubuntu a few months back) when they had similar problems, the solution seemed to be to add this line to the xorg.conf

If I do that, the above log is not there anymore and finds all the input devices, but still cannot type anything....

Where are you supposed to add those lines?

What is odd about my setup is that all users can log in to the console, and the keyboard works fine until they startx when it goes wrong. I have also tried gnome (just in case) and that makes no difference.

But I wouldn't mess with it if you don't know how that works. Easy to bork it in a way that's harder to fix when there's a solution later. Check out more of the forums in the meantime to pick up more info and be more confident how things work.

That's the situation for everyone. Not that odd, though, because the keyboard for the console has absolutely nothing to do with the keyboard support for X. They are completely separate. And since it is the problem of the X server, no matter if you use KDE, Gnome, XFCE, anything else... it will be the same underlying problem.

There seems to be enough stir already, hope some of the developers pick up the noise and there's a fix soon....

I understand that, but that does not explain why my Xwindows works fine, keyboard and all, and no other user on my system can get it to work at all, including root!

First you said: the console works and X does not. What do you mean by "xwindows", then?  Also, whether it is root or not, does not make any difference.

I've got exactly the same problem as imrehg, have tried the fixes listed in this thread and same problem. Xorg logs don't really seem to show anything out of the ordinary.

I had to change my keyboard layout in /etc/hal/fdi/policies/10-keymap.fdi from uk to gb, then everything was alright again.

      <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">gb</merge>

Line 19.

It seems Xorg as suddently got a lot more fraglie and less lienient. Hope this helps some of you!

Edit: or should I say HAL..... as if it ever was lienient.

Managed to fix it by changing this line:

Option "XkbLayout" "uk"

to

Option "XkbLayout" "gb"

in xorg.conf.

Got to try this one later, I have "gb" keyboard as well, so probably the same issue...

Okay, fixed for now, almost the same way as you have said.

Had to change the value in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi to read

<merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">gb</merge>

It was "uk" before, and it still gave me an us keyboard. Now with "gb" everything is back to normal.... I wonder what was this...

I had to reinstall Arch Linux and what a packet of trouble reconfiguring xorg.conf gave me! There seems to be a tussle between the settings in xorg.conf and the auto-magic configuration of X by the new X-server. The xorg.conf.new file generated by Xorg -configure would not work and I had a lot of trouble trying to configure it properly
I have managed to get the keyboard and mouse working properly at last, but I still get a US instead of a UK keyboard. I have followed the advice here and changed /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi to read:
<merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">gb</merge>
and also changed Option "XkbLayout" in the "InputDevice" to read:
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
The US keyboard layout won't shift. What else should I do? Unfortunately I cannot shop in dollars.

I have an entry in ~/.xinitrc
setxkbmap gb
But it is ignored. The US keyboard returns after a reboot. I can temporarily code:
$ setxkbmap gb
and for one session it will give me a correct gb keyboard layout, but it is not permanent. Why should this be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I want to be able to set the gb keyboard layout globally and not just for my own account.

I have found a solution, "gnome-keyboard-properties" was overiding my system settings, and giving a us keyboard layout by default. I had to change the System/Preferences/Keyboard/Layout settings in each account to uk default and delete the us layout.
Maybe this happened because I installed the gnome desktop before I had properly configured X.
