[Solved] KDE Desktop Effects could not be activated

I am using vanilla KDE 4.3.4 and when I try to use desktop effects I get a notification that they couldnt be activated. I have a screenshot - is there any way to attach it ?

FYI I dont think it is my hardware as I had effects using Mandriva. Anyway it is a Dell 1525 with 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c).

Also confirmed that powerdevil does NOT have the disable effects settings on.

thanks

Have you installed the correct driver for your graphics card ? Desktop effects can't be used unless 3D acceleration is enabled, the correct driver for your card will do the job.

Re: [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects could not be activated

This is what I installed
pacman -S xf86-video-intel

same hardware and driver combination as http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_Inspiron_1525

Do I need to enable it seperately ?

You may have to read the Intel video faq to get correct 3D rendering and effects:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics

Re: [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects could not be activated

Just to add some more detail if my last post wasnt clear.  I followed the instructions and tried both adding the changes as a part of the initial ram image and the to the list of daemons on start up. In both cases I did get the higher resolution on the console. This did not resolve the issue of the desktop effects and I still get the same notification that the Desktop effects could not be started. Compositing is also suspended despite pressing on the resume compositing button / Alt-Shift- F12.

thanks

Re: [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects could not be activated

As I've suggested several times before to people trying to get KWin compositing, try with Compiz please, in order to troubleshoot.

Compiz typically gives more specific error messages, and if Compiz works, then the problem is with KWin specifically.
