[kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

i'm running a fresh arch installation with kdebase on top. in power management > performance profile, i've configured the laptop go into standby mode (suspend to ram) when the system is idle for more than 30 mins., when the lid is closed, and when the sleep button is pressed.

the computer goes into standby mode properly. no issues there.

but when i try to get out of it, all i get is a black screen and a mouse cursor (which works fine). no desktop, no menus, no keyboard. the only thing i can do is do a hard power down.

any ideas? thanks.

edit: here's the log.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

I guess you can also do a Ctrl-Alt-F1, if you can still control your mouse, which means the system has not locked up.  Did you turn on kwin composition?  You may try Alt-Shift-F12 to toggle it and see if it helps.

the keyboard doesn't work after coming out of standby, unfortunately.

the log looks fine, so i'm not sure what the problem is.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

some more information.

1. this is basically the problem i have: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Com … ry_drivers

blank screen + responsive cursor. however, i'm using neither compiz nor nvidia.

2. i tried typing 'sudo pm-suspend' from the console, but when i try to resume, the cursor is not the normal kde one, but a simple one. also, the cursor is not responsive.

3. i also tried editing mkinitcpio.conf (added 'resume' and removed 'autodetect'), but that didn't work.

I am experiencing the same thing using Xmonad on my desktop. The screen goes black and xscreensaver does not start. The keyboard/mouse is then unresponsive. This started yesterday so it must of been one of the updates. Also, I run the nvidia 190.53-3 under x86_64.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

securitybreach, does your pm-suspend.log look normal?

i just tried uswsusp. running 'sudo s2ram -f' works: suspend and resume work properly. however, i get serious graphical glitches after resuming.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

As far as I know I have no power managerment since this is a desktop

╔═ root@Venus 11:03 PM
╚═══ /home/comhack-> updatedb

╔═ comhack@Venus 11:03 PM
╚═══ ~-> locate pm-suspend.log

╔═ comhack@Venus 11:04 PM
╚═══ ~->

I do have this though:

╔═ comhack@Venus 11:04 PM
╚═══ ~-> cat /var/log/pm-powersave.log
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sched-powersave false: **sched policy powersave OFF
success.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

getting close!

i just tried 'sudo pm-suspend --auto-quirks' and suspend/resume worked perfectly (and rather quickly, i should add).

how do i make that the default command?

edit: nevermind. i spoke too soon. now when i type 'sudo pm-suspend --auto-quirks', suspend works fine, but when i try to resume, i end up with a black screen and an unresponsive cursor. this is worse than before.

however, i did discover something. i added a file called 00auto-quirk to /etc/pm/sleep.d, and while i was able to resume properly, i had severe graphical problems.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

Hi guys,

I'm just a new comer to Archlinux, and I'm a chemist who do not know much about linux. I've had the same problem resuming my laptop after suspension, especially, the mouse does not function anymore. I've got pm-utils, uswsusp, hibernate-script installed.

Start to search on the internet and turn out you guys are facing the same thing. After spending one week configuring the code with Vim, finally I cracked it. It's a simple tweak.

Put your config file named 'modules' into /etc/pm/config.d/ with the following line :

SUSPEND_MODULES="button"

My previous configuration was:

SUSPEND_MODULES="button uhci_hcd"

After deleting the "uhci_hcd" the machine resumes smoothly, because when I set "uhci_hcd" all the comonents is brought down but unable to be back again, that was why my mouse, monitor did not function.

Hope this tip will be helpful to avoid hair-scratching.

Cheer

Henry

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

Just seen your log file, it seems to be problematic with graphical card right?

One more try, just append 2 lines below to the modules file mentioned in the previous post.

SLEEP_MODULE="tuxonice uswsusp kernel"
HIBERNATE_MODE="shutdown"

As you said that

pm-suspend --auto-quirks

works nicely for you, then why don't you create your own hook or let it interact with HAL, something like :

# We only support pm-utils...not anymore!
if [ -x "/usr/sbin/pm-suspend" ] ; then
  # Suspend2 tools installed
  /usr/sbin/pm-suspend --auto-quirks
  RET=$?
elif [ -x /usr/sbin/hibernate ] ; then
  /usr/sbin/hibernate --force
  RET=$?
else
  unsupported
fi

Not easy at all.
good luck !

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

some more information.

1. the above suggestions didn't work.
2. i've noticed that suspend/resume seems to work properly when programs (e.g., browser, file manager, etc.) are open, but not when there are no programs open. what might explain this?

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

i've narrowed down the problem. it seems to be a graphics issue.

first observation: any screen-blanking event (e.g., suspend to ram, switching to a virtual terminal, etc.) triggers the problem.
second observation: when compositing is disabled, everything works fine. i can resume properly, i can switch between the virtual terminals and the gui, etc. without any issues.
third observation: when compositing is disabled, i can return to the gui without any trouble. but as soon as i enable compositing, the screen turns black and all that remains is the mouse cursor. i can see the screen go blank.

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

Hi guys

I have similar problem but my mouse doesn't work. To restart my laptop I use magic commands.

In my system is kernel26-ck from AUR, xf86-video-ati (ATI X1400) and pm-utils with powerdevil.

After last crash I discovered in my Xorg.0.log.old something like this::

(II) RADEON(0): RADEONRestoreMemMapRegisters() :

Re: [kde] trouble coming out of standby: black screen + mouse

I have the same problem here. I'm using KDE 4.6 with Kwin activated. When i change the profile of energy to Performance the screen turn on black with only the mouse available.

The only way to access to the desktop again it's disabling Kwin (Alt + Shift +F12)

I checked the X.org.0.log and i found this

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 15764.544] _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
[ 15764.545] _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
[ 15764.545]
Fatal server error:
[ 15764.547] Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
