[SOLVED] nVidia driver 195.36.08 causes KDE4.4 to crash after logging?

Hi to all Archers smile

I noticed the new nVidia driver (195.36.08) on pacman's yesterday updates, I didn't update it immediately and preferred to wait until I was available to fiddle with it in case things went wrong. Apparently, that was the case big_smile

Here's what happens if I install the new driver:
KDM starts as usual, I login in, I see KDE loading progress and before it finishes, boom it crashes and returns to KDM login once again.

I tried reinstalling KDE, Xorg and read nVidia wiki to see if there is any hints. I tried once again with a new stock xorg.conf, and removed .nvidia-settings-rc and even disabled KDE compositing but all this couldn't help getting KDE up and running.

However, when I reinstall the previous version (190.53) everything is back to normal.

So what I want to know is am I the only one who gets this problem or there're others here having the same issue?

Because the first time I installed the nVidia driver (almost 3 months now) I used their own installer then used Arch packages afterwards, I suspect that perhaps their installer messed things up !?

For now the solution is to stick to the previous version.

I'm using Arch Linux 32bit and my GC is an nVidia 7300GT.

Regards,

Med

Hmm, no problem here with the same driver and KDE 4.4.

Re: [SOLVED] nVidia driver 195.36.08 causes KDE4.4 to crash after logging?

I always update kernel and nvidia driver after I made sure that X is totally killed (etc/rc.d/kdm stop) and I always use depmod -a afterwards, and for me it works now, but I have another problem: After around half an hour of going well, desktop effects slows down, somteimes I can see nothing in dmesg | tail and sometimes I can see something like API mismatch, module is 195.36.08 and driver is 190.53. torcs drops frames even. Does someone have similar problem?

You need to update lib32-nvidia-utils to the same version of installed nvidia driver.

I have it, but still slow. But now I don't have the error message (only the slowness)

I'm using a 32bit (i686) system, I think lib32-nvidia-utils is for x86_64. And both nvidia and nvidia-utilis version 195.36.08 are present on my db cache and were installed together.

After I posted my first entry I reinstalled all nvidia-utilis dependencies (mesa mplayer nvidia qt xorg-server xorg-utils) and even created a new user thus eliminating the possibility of a corrupted KDE config file.

I think there are three remaining possibilities, either:
1. nVidia driver installer messed some files up.
2. There are still remaining issues with version 195.36.08 this is why it's not on their download page yet.
3. Some packages I have on cache may for some reason be problematic (downloaded a buggy package? or weren't updated during the new release of libjpeg/libpng?)

I don't know if it's a good idea to reinstall all system packages, will it mess things up if I do so ?
and if I remain the only one with this weird nvidia issue I'll try to re-download everything and give it another try.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help.

Regards,
Med

Re: [SOLVED] nVidia driver 195.36.08 causes KDE4.4 to crash after logging?

I want to install the 190.53 version of nvidia driver, because it's the correct driver version for my video card, according to nvidia site (see http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp … 0.53.html).

Also, in my prevoius arch system I installed that version and everything worked well. I don't want to try the newerr version. It doesn't matter if 190.53 are not the latest driver available. I'm self confident with the 190.53 version.

How can I install them? The problem is that pacman suggest me only the latest version :-(

You'll find them here http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/ after choose your system architecture.

if you want to know more about downgrading for more than a few packages read this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dow … g_Packages

Assuming you have a recent nvidia graphic card and using a i686 system you should download these:
http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/ … pkg.tar.gz
http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/ … pkg.tar.gz

Good luck,

Re: [SOLVED] nVidia driver 195.36.08 causes KDE4.4 to crash after logging?

It's a NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M.

According to the official site, driver version are 190.53 for linux 32 bit e 195.63 (I'm not so sure about the number, but it's 195."something more than 36") for Windows Xp.

Thanks for the site: http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/

Re: [SOLVED] nVidia driver 195.36.08 causes KDE4.4 to crash after logging?

Today I installed nVidia driver 195.36.08 which is officially released now using their own installer. It complained about some missing kernel .ko files which it fixed.

Now everything is back to normal.

Same slowdown problem here on Dell Vostro 1700. NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Going back to 190.53 solved it.

While I didn't notice any slow down because I'm using it just for simple tasks YES there is a major performance regression.

Using $ glxgears :
Driver 195.36.08 yields ~75fps
Driver 190.53 yields ~1700fps

I'm too back to 190.53.

Good luck,

I download the 190.53 version of nvidia drivers. The I boot Arch Linux and...

And I launch pacman -S nvidia!!!

I'm very stupid. With that command pacman installed on my machine the newest evrsion of driver, not the one I manually download.

I'm very stupid. Stupid but lucky big_smile

Everything works fine. So, now, I have the latest version working.
