[SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Hi guys, first post, but 3 years on Arch on my 4 pc cool
Two weeks ago bought a new notebook with a brand new ATI HD5650, a Sony Vaio VPCEB1Z1E. My old notebook burned out hmm
I'm using xf86-video-ati, but I need to work with blender so I need 3D accel, not available with the open source drivers for my card.

So I tested the new catalyst-test 10.4 from AUR having support for xorg 1.7, but without success.
Simply xorg doesn't start up.
Here some info (I'm using testing repository, x86_64 system)

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Can you try using Xorg 1.7.5? Looks like a nasty incompatibility thing between driver and Xorg. :S I have very similar setup working with Vi0L0's catalyst-minimize-fix xorg server (which is 1.7.6), thats another option you might try.

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

I tested with xorg-server 1.7.5 and with xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix, but with no luck.
xorg.0.log shows me this error, could be this?

(II) LoadModule: "xtrap"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module xtrap
(II) UnloadModule: "xtrap"
(EE) Failed to load module "xtrap" (module does not exist, 0)

I installed libxtrap, but I have the same error sad

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Delete your xorg.conf and run as root

aticonfig --initial

Reboot and remember add fglrx to modules section on /etc/rc.conf

I have the same error, so it doesnt count.
I suggest you to try what agapito mentioned.
The SegFault shows it is trying some portion of the initialization of fglrx that is not compatible with the Xorg's installed binary. sad

Delete your xorg.conf and run as root

aticonfig --initial

Reboot and remember add fglrx to modules section on /etc/rc.conf

Same error also with kernel 2.6.32 stable or kernel 2.6.33 testing, or Xorg 1.7.5 or 1.7.6 :(

Deleted xorg.conf and created only with aticonfig --initial

aticonfig --initial gave me this minimal xorg.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
    Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
    Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
    Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"

    Driver "fglrx"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"

    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24

But Xorg.0.log shows the same warnings (no errors though)

PS: my notebook is very new, maybe its ati chip is not supported (for example, sound card is not suported by alsa, and wireles work only with kernel>=2.6.33).

Thank you for your patience :)

Looks like it dies when it's trying to query EDID. In my log at that part it's able to query it and detects modes to use. (In my case it's 1366x768. I'm using an Acer Aspire 5740g)

My log goes like this, at the part where your's segfaults:

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

So my problem is monitor related?
My notebook has a native resolution of 1920x1080.
This one on ubuntuforums has the same problem, so it's not related to arch or something else, but to the driver (or to Sony Vaio)

What is your exact model?
I have a vaio e too, model VPC EB1Z1E/B.
What is the native resolution of your display?
Have you tested catalyst-test 10.4-444? I'll test it later if I have some time

Anyway the problem seems related only to Vaio series e pc

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

I get that xtrap error and X segfault described in the first post as well on a normal PC.
ATI HD4850

catalyst-test 10.4-444
xorg-server 1.7.5.902-1
kernel26 2.6.32.10-1

This config *should* work, right? Or did I get something wrong there?
fglrx listed in modules, tried to boot with or without nomodeset kernel line. (is this still required?)

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

A little update.

catalyst-test 10.4 444 gives me the same problems, X won't start.

Looking to an EDID problem, i tried to disable it in xorg.conf, adding these lines:

Section "Device"
   ...
   Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   ...
   DefaultDepth 24
   ...

   SubSection "Display"
      Depth 24
      Modes "1920x1080"
   EndSubSection

EndSection

But the same Xorg.0.log

Looking for something else

It's like this problem affects vaio series e.
Here a bug report, hoping for a solution:

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Some updates.

I read the EDID and saved a copy to HD with a win software, and I found that my display doesn't support DDC (clearly says "DDC not supported").
I think that is why Xorg crashes.
If I parse that file with parse-edid (with read-edid in AUR) I get:

parse-edid: parse-edid version 2.0.0
parse-edid: EDID checksum passed.

    # EDID version 1 revision 3
Section "Monitor"
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
    Identifier "MS_:2500"
    VendorName "MS_"
    ModelName "MS_:2500"
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
    # DPMS capabilities: Active off:yes Suspend:yes Standby:yes

    Mode "1920x1080" # vfreq 59.945Hz, hfreq 66.779kHz
        DotClock 138.500000
        HTimings 1920 1945 1996 2074
        VTimings 1080 1085 1096 1114
    EndMode
    Mode "1920x1080" # vfreq 49.991Hz, hfreq 58.390kHz
        DotClock 138.500000
        HTimings 1920 1995 2145 2372
        VTimings 1080 1094 1107 1168
    EndMode
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
    # Block type: 2:0 3:0
EndSection

Now, if it's a DDC problem and not an ATI problem, why Xorg with radeon drivers works, while with fglrx it doesn't?
I think because radeon doesn't need a xorg.conf, while fglrx does.
So I think it could be solved configuring xorg.conf the right way.

I tried to disable DDC in xorg.conf with:

Section "Device"
   ...
   Option "NoDDC" "true"
EndSection

as I found here

Or disabling XRandR support like I read here

But still not working...

I also tried to completely disable EDID but I know it could be dangerous for the display.

Any tip? Can I overpass DDC?

edit:
I forgot the get-edid (from read-edid) output:

get-edid: get-edid version 2.0.0

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Your best bet would be extracting the EDID from a similar laptop with a same-resolution screen and tell Xorg to use that. That's what we did with a friend's Vaio and it works fine now.

I can't because I have no friends with a similar pc. But also I think that it is a problem of a lot of Vaio series e. Googling around I found a lot of users, from ubuntu to fedora to gentto and others, having similar problem. The vaio series e monitors seems shipped without DDC. And fglrx need DDC to work.

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Well, all I can suggest is to extract your EDID from Windows using this: http://www.entechtaiwan.com/lib/softmccs.shtm (File -> Save EDID)

Then, specify the EDID in xorg.conf device section like this:

   Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
   Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/youredid.bin"

I already tried mccs without luck (mccs gives me a corrupted EDID, and no DDC support), and unfortunately this catalyst doesn't work without a DDC.

But, as I found here, this bug seems solved with the catalyst release of yesterday 11 of april. (version 10.4-666). I hope so.
I'm going to test now. smile

Yes!
10.4-666 fix my problem!
Now catalyst works out of the box.
Only two things: first X is a bit slow and laggy, and second compiz works but metacity compositor doesn't

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

"Slow and laggy" is a catalyst bug. You need a patched X server to fix that.

For xorg-server 1.7 you can use one of these:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35686
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=26687

For 1.8 you can use this:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=36328

Hope it helps smile

Re: [SOLVED] Catalyst 10.4 on Ati HD5650 not working

Thanks, i'll try xorg-server-1.7-catalyst-maximize-fix.

Some problems also with blender (OpenGL)... it's a bit laggy too. Maybe i'll try with xorg 1.8.
Anyway, I'm really happy with this driver
