pcmanfm sort order of files

Hello all, I have a question. Is there a way to change the default sort order of pcmanfm? Whenever I start it up, files will be shown sorted by type. I would like it to sort files by name instead.

Re: pcmanfm sort order of files

I know this is an old topic/thread but I just figured it out.

use your text editor in a terminal and open up .config/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf, example

vim ~/.config/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf

edit the sort_by line so that it reads sort_by=1

1 is to sort the items by name.

Each time you restart pcmanfm this file is loaded, so even if you change the sort order from the view menu the settings do not seem to be permanent unless you edit this file.

I don't think it's _that_ old and you have a reason to post here - great job with the solution, just be sure to comment it somehow in case you're wandering some time down the road why some particular settings aren't working.

Re: pcmanfm sort order of files

i edited the line in ~/.config/pcmanfm/lxde/pcmanfm.conf at the bottom in the ui section and it still wont sort when i open it, stuff is still random. any ideas?

edit: should be sort_by=2 for sort by name

Re: pcmanfm sort order of files

I was also wondering about this annoyance and found this thread searching for a solution.

Experimenting now, it seems you actually don't have to edit the pcmanfm.conf manually. If you set the sort order you want, then go to Edit / Preferences / Close, then pcmanfm will save your current sort_type and sort_by as well even though they're not in the Preferences GUI interface. So that's an easy way to do it. smile

Re: pcmanfm sort order of files

Over time programs change. What used to be an involved task might be a lot easier to do several releases later. I don't use pcmanfm but I think this still constitutes necro-bumping: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … Bumping.27
