Gnome/Xorg crashes at random for me sometimes. Happens almost everyday. Don't know what triggers it but I've been typing something on the keyboard every single time it happens.

You could try disabling compositing but on older intel chipsets modesetting doesn't work correctly. Downgrade the driver to 2.9.1 and add nomodeset to grub kernel line.
I think that the intel developers decided that nobody uses older intel graphics chipsets. Anything that resembles i915 is problematic. Since intel provides the graphics driver there hasn't been any recent development efforts that support older chipsets by outside developers.
Fortunately, nvidia and ati never provided open drivers and that has led to good development efforts there. Sadly, amd is now starting to provide open drivers and that may kill support for older ati chipsets in future xorg releases. On the plus side, nvidia has abandoned the nv driver and has no other open drivers. That should provide incentive for nouveau to continue supporting older chipsets.

I'm not sure it they're using *that* old chipsets. My IBM Netvista is about 6yo and runs smoothly on intel-legacy.

Still haven't resolved this issue. Although I've figured out that Xorg uses tty2 on boot. Also whenever it crashes and I change to tty2 I see some random chars (eg. PPPAAAAHH^^^^^^^^^ĤHHHHH) at the login prompt.
Could it be that Xorg startes too soon?

I've managed to solve this, I believe. Don't experience any crashes and X startes in tty7, as it should.
I've moved this line to the end of my inittab instead of the beginning.

Probably another good reason for us to try to support the open source drivers wherever possible as well. You never know when the vendor who supplies the closed stuff is going to cut the cord and cease support. At least if the code is still out there people can potentially maintain it to work with a new x or kernel model.
