kde system continually restarting after update

a recent update seems to have spawned a fairly serious problem: the screen goes black and kde restarts continually. i've noticed the following:

1. loading rekonq and then moving the mouse causes kde to restart.
2. typing in rekonq causes the problem.
3. arora seems to be better (in that i can actually browse to different pages and type), but every now and then, typing will cause kde to restart.

here's the most recent update:

Re: kde system continually restarting after update

I suppose you do start kdm from inittab, when it crashes it will restart.

Jun 20 23:20:13 arch kdm[1790]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

To find out whats causing the X-server crash, have a look at the Xorg logs...

Re: kde system continually restarting after update

yes, x is definitely crashing. i'm just trying to figure out why. the problem seems to be related to web browsers. i've noticed that as soon as i type 'fbd' into the urlbar in arora, x crashes and kde restarts.

here's the xorg log: http://www.pastebin.ca/1887776

edit: i reformatted my root partition and now everything works. interestingly, kms, which i had disabled earlier, works as well. perhaps enabling kms resolved the issue.
