[SOLVED] Random kernel panics

Problem: I'm having random kernel panics in my laptop for almost a week now.

Symptom: The laptop completely freezes and the caps locks keeps blinking. The fan starts rotating at full speed (3400+ rpm) and the air is warm. I noted that the kernel panic is more likely to occur if I leave the laptop idle for quite some time (10-30 minutes).

Device:
Lenovo Thinkpad L14 Gen 1
Core i5-10201U
1 TB HDD
8 GB Ram

Possible Clues:
Integrated Camera: For whatever reason, the webcam doesn't work (it used to work once). Going in Zoom shows the integrated camera continuously connecting and disconnecting in the Video settings. I asked about this problem about 2 months ago [https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=292728] here but it didn't solve the issue.
HDD: GNOME disk utility says there are 1080 bad sectors in the HDD.
Harmless (?) errors: I get errors like `ACPI Bios error` and `Malformed MSFT vendor error 0x02` while booting in and shutting down.

How I tried to solve:
1. The first thing that I did was reinstall (multiple times). I switched to the lts kernel. Still the issue persisted. I haven't still tried linux-mainline.
2. To rule out faulty RAM possibility, I ran Memtest86 from arch live usb. It passed and there was 0 errors.
3. To rule out faulty CPU possibility, I ran cpu stress test for 10 minutes. It worked perfectly fine and the temperature was average 85'C at all times.
4. To rule out faulty HDD possibility, I ran `smartctl` and `badblocks`. badblocks took more than 2.5 hours but concluded there was 0 errors in HDD. And here is the smartctl output.

5. I unsuccessfully tried disabling the integrated camera following the accepted answer from [https://askubuntu.com/questions/166809/ … -my-webcam] here just a few minutes ago. Here's lsusb in case it matters.

Re: [SOLVED] Random kernel panics

The disk would scare tf out of me and I'd not trust it, but if we rule that out and along "more likely to occur if I leave the laptop idle for quite some time" and "ran cpu stress test for 10 minutes. It worked perfectly fine"
=> https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … Intel_CPUs

Thank you. Added `ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1` kernel parameter and waiting for the next panic (if it occurs). I'd let you know.

Re: [SOLVED] Random kernel panics

Been 18 days. No kernel panic so far. So this can be marked as solved.
