Lenovo P1 Gen5 needs rebuild after every few days due to system freeze

Hi,

I am having a big problem recently with my laptop which is a Lenovo P1 Gen5. For some reason the whole system will freeze every few days and is completely unusable thereafter.

I basically am having to boot from the USB installation media at that point and reinstall the system as many libraries seem to be moved to the "lost+found" folder.

Unfortunately I don't know what information to provide for this bizarre behavior but basically my system is just about unusable. I think it started when the kernel jumped from version 5.x to 6.x as I'm mainly running the LTS kernel. Currently I am booted into the mainstream kernel so I don't know if this will have issues....

I rebuilt the system yesterday and today again I was using VirtualBox running  a VM of Windows in order to use Topaz denoise on my photography work in conjunction with RawTherapee where I was processing the images.

The system completely froze and the CapsLock key started blinking. I had to perform a hard reboot by holding the power button and the system was completely gone.

I tried checking the "journalctl -k" command after Googling a little but that doesn't show previous boots. In the past I have noticed that the journal log contains a "kernel bug" error with a "cut here" clause....

I know the information I am giving describes the problem but doesn't give any helpful information at all.... what can I provide that will help either understand to diagnose the problem better??

The best information I could find is this:

...using this command:

Re: Lenovo P1 Gen5 needs rebuild after every few days due to system freeze

Unfortunately my system went down again today.... :-(

I ran a: pacman -Syu     then "reboot" command and again the Caps Lock key started blinking and the system didn't shutdown and just hung.

At that stage I used my now "normal" recovery procedure in booting from USB installation medium then:

fsck -p /dev/nvme0n1p1

fsck -p /dev/nvme0n1p2

fsck -p /dev/nvme0n1p4

fsck -p /dev/nvme1n1p1

mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt

mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot

ip link

dhcpcd -i {ethernet_if}

pacman-key --init

pacman-key --populate archlinux

pacman --root /mnt --cache /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg -Qqn | pacman --root /mnt --cache /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg -S -

arch-chroot /mnt

after that I run a little "repair" script I wrote:

#! /bin/sh

for pkg in $(pacman -Q | cut -d' ' -f1); do
    pacman -S --noconfirm $pkg
done

then finally another:

pacman -Qqn | pacman -S -

followed by:

mkinitcpio -P

I mean what is strange is that I haven't customized any files at all.... my system is complete stock Arch from install.... the only thing I am doing is running the:

startx

command to get my GUI up and running of which I run the Mate Desktop.

All I have in my .xinitrc is this:

$ cat .xinitrc
exec mate-session

Some reading I have done suggests it might be a dbus error?

That came from this posting: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=289025

From:

there are a few modules that seem to be "blacklisted" but I don't know if any of these are relavent?

This is really strange what is happening as I have been running Arch for a long long time and it's never been this bad before.... I just wonder if it's something to do with the kernel more then anything else and perhaps not supporting my hardware well??

Re: Lenovo P1 Gen5 needs rebuild after every few days due to system freeze

The blinking caps lock inidcates you are suffering from Kernel panics .

There have been many reports about issues with the nvidia 550 drivers, try the 535 version from aur ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Thank you!

Would that be the DKMS driver branch?

Re: Lenovo P1 Gen5 needs rebuild after every few days due to system freeze

It's  a split package that will built 3 binary pacakges : nvidia-535xx-utils, opencl-nvidia-535xx, nvidia-535xx-dkms in the same build run.

You need all 3 to replace the current 550 version.
Before installing/running the dkms package ensure you have the necessary headers package installed for kernels you use.
(linux-headers for the stock kernel)

I installed the nvidia-535xx-dkms package which installed the *-utils package and hopefully the opencl-* package too??

I cheated a bit and used "yay"

The headers weren't a problem as I have those for VirtualBox.

Hopefully this will be more stable now and I will be able to use my machine again without having to rebuild continuously.

Thank you so much for all the assistance!! I was really starting to panic that I wouldn't have a usable machine any more.... :-)
